Charmed [Season 3, Episode 1]
The Honeymoon's Over
Shown 23rd February 2002 [Saturday]
Phoebe [ Alyssa Milano ] and Pru [ Shannen Doherty ] are looking after the house and the nightclub. Piper [ Holly Marie Combs ] has disappeared with her white-lighter boyfriend [Brian Krause].
The token black guy, a cop, is single-handedly tracking down a serial killer. He calls the girls for help, rather than getting a partner or a SWAT team. This is lucky because the killer has demonic assistance and predictably bushwhacks the cop ...
The girls are called as witnesses by Cole, the Assistant DA. Their evidence is not enough to get the killer arraigned by the Judge, nicknamed Free Willy. How terrible that a Liberal Judge who treats people like they are innocent until proven guilty is supposed to be villainous. The really villainous character is Cole, who has a vicious edge. He manages to hide it from Phoebe, who wants him. He will be an interesting recurring character ...
The Halliwell sisters stumble into a scenario that rips off the movie Ladyhawke . A woman dumped her boss and went off with a loser instead. The boss turns out to be a warlock, who turned the man into a dove and the woman into a wolf. The witches must defeat the boss's love for the bitch - err, she-wolf - and leave her free to sleep with a man who earns less money than her. Yeah, like that is any more realistic than the magic!
The girl is a very young-looking Elizabeth Harnois , who later became the Devil's Daughter in Point Pleasant .
Piper is secretly plotting to marry her BF Leo. Phoebe's BF the duplicitous DA Cole finds out about this, and when he tells his masters it is obvious something bad will happen.
Piper is suffering terrible angst because her BF Leo has been taken from her by TPTB. She decides to go on strike as far as magic is concerned.
By complete random chance, Phoebe meets a six-year-old girl who claims to be stalked by vicious invisible foot-high trolls. Trolls and fairies apparently The witches theorise that fairies and trolls are not mentioned in their Book of Shadows because it was written by adults. It makes you wonder what else was left out of the book!
Do the writers take the opportunity to explore the nature of reality, especially in terms of comparative perception? No, they decide to dumb the show down even more. Pru and Phoebe snort some fairy dust, and their personalities revert to that of six-year-olds. Something the show's target audience can relate to, eh?
Phoebe's BF Cole pops up briefly, and we get to see more of his cunning plan. His true form is revealed, as is his goal.
Phoebe's luurve interest Cole is sent by his demonic bosses, The Triad, to change history. They send him to seventeenth-century Virginia, to interfere in the birth of the sisters' ancestor. The sisters are sent after him, though they do not know exactly who they are up against. Pru and Piper look nice in their laced-up blouses, but Phoebe has a low-cut top and a wonder-bra!
While in the past, Phoebe discovers that her true-love's name begins with the letter C. Cole is aware of this, but it doesn't stop him being eeevil.
Meanwhile, Leo and the token black guy [now demoted from detective to uniformed patrolman, apparently] are besieged in the sisters' mansion by a pair of bald albino men.
Someone breaks into the Halliwell House and smashes all the mirrors. Pru is paranoid about demons and suspects everyone - even D.A. Cole.
Belthazor the Triad's undercover demon has a rival, an invisible man with a goatee beard. The African-American thinks it is a human stalker, possibly the descendant of Pru's 1600s luurve interest from last episode.
Belthazor calls in backup to help remove the Power of Three. The demonic sidekick is a ragged-looking Jason Carter [ Babylon 5 ], who can enhance his victims' anger.
Cole and Phoebe spend the night together, and have to decide how their relationship will procede from there.
Belthazor is being hunted by a demonic bounty hunter. Piper and Prue want to kill the poor guy off as well, even though he turned on his employers rather than kill Phoebe.
Phoebe discovers that Cole is injured. She has to get Leo to heal him ...
Piper [ Holly Marie Combs ] dances sexy to the somg Unbelievable, in a scene that certainly couldn't be called Piper Ugly.
Phoebe finds out about Cole's past.
The sisters discover a supernatural ice cream van. The driver is capturing small kids and keeping them in the back.
The sisters' father [James Read - North & South] is in town. We get to see why he had to leave them when they were very young. By strange coincidence, the ice-cream van is involved!
A Warlock named Aimes [the English guy from Crossing Jordan] is out to assassinate the Halliwells' Whitelighter. Leo resigns, and calls in a replacement - a fussy woman named Natalie.
We get to see where the Elders live. It's full of fog, and everyone there wears white anoraks.
Phoebe [ Alyssa Milano casts a spell to find things that are lost - with typical effects.
Pru recovers a friend who is a lost soul. He has joined forces with a demon [Ron Perlman - Beauty & The Beast ], a wrestling manager who has floating razor-ball things from Phantasm. This gives the episode a couple of things the show tends to lack: action and a moral centre.
Pru is stalked and kidnapped by a Warlock who wants to marry her and turn her evil. Thanks to a Priestess of Evil [ Una Damon ] he gets a good start ...
Piper and Phoebe turn evil too. They become complete caricatures who act out lots of villain cliches. What a terrible wasted opportunity!
Belthazor is back. But for some reason, Phoebe has changed her mind about him. She uses him when it suits her, though.
Phoebe falls victim to a curse, which slowly kills her. Luckily the girls' father [James Read] drops by to look after her.
Pru and Cole go back in time to the Wild West, where eevil Ed Lauter is trying to take over a small town. The good guys must save a Native American who is being hunted by Lauter. This allows the director to use lots of clumsy symbolism like doves and crows, very OTT and pretentious for a show like this.
Piper and Leo take a break from practising their wedding to do research into the wild west town.
Piper and Leo are due to be married. Her dad [James Read] is still in town from last ep, and her mum comes back from the dead [looking just like she did in 1970] for the day. With Grandma's ghost to perform the wedding ceremony, and other ghosts as witnesses, what can go wrong? The fact it can't possibly be legally binding is never mentioned!
Pru astrally projects herself. Her astral form is less inhibited and uptight than her usual self - not evil, but almost as much fun. Unfortunately this disrupts the wedding, and when a demon frames her for murder it gets even worse!
The 3 sisters are individually attacked by a chubby, kinda gay warlock. They vanquish him by brutally stabbing him with nearby objects, but he doesn't take the hint and keeps coming back. It turns out, if they kill him 9 times then he wins.
Meanwhile, we see flashbacks to the time before Phoebe went to NYC. Pru was getting married, while Piper worked as a bank clerk. The 3 sisters fight amongst themselves, while their granny is suffering from some physical malady. She also takes the photo that appears in the start credits. We also get a cameo of Leo, who bumps into Piper when she complains she'll never find True Love.
Will the sisters split up? Did their Granny intend to ensure they never met their Wiccan destiny.
Cole pretends to be Belthazor again, to rejoin the Brotherhood of the Thorn. Was this the inspiration for the Circle of the Black Thorn in Angel Season 5 ?
Has Cole turned eeevil again for real?
Phoebe is transformed into a banshee, due to her frigid contempt for her demon lover.
Pru, meanwhile, is transformed into something else. Due to her off-screen falling out with the other actress, her role is played by ... a dog!
Phoebe faces Cole, while Pru battles the Source.
The witches are exposed to the Media. Their solution - they have to turn back time.
Demons can't kill the witches. But a crazy girl with a rifle can!
