SF-UK

This week the show starts by running through the heavily cliched Invasion Earth show for us. The focus then shift to UK SF heroes:

  • Dan Dare [Biggles in Space)
  • Avon (the bastard from Blake's Seven)
  • C-3PO (the robotic butler)

Unlike previous episodes, this time there are interviews with many of the people intimately associated with the subject!

    Shown

Troy Tempest and his sidekick, Phones, are captured by the mysterious fishman Titan, ruler of the the underwater city of Titanicus. They meet up with the babelicious mute mermaid (okay, she is not half fish but you know what I mean) Marina. Will she help them to escape before their boss nukes the area?

Of note, one of the voice actors is Lois Maxwell (Moneypenny in the Bond films)!

Stingray [Season 1, Episode 34] Plant of Doom

Titan speaks to his Sea God (some kind of super-intelligent fish) and asks it to provide the means of destroying Marina. It conjurs up a flower (air-breathing, not seaweed) which emits a highly toxic perfume. Titan discovers Marina is en route to her home city with Troy Tempest, so he has his lackey take the flower to Marina's father.

Jason And The Argonauts [Part II]

This version seems closer to the original than the 1960s version did. However, the ending seems to have been changed ...

Jason And The Argonauts [Part I]

This version was made almost 40 years after the Ray Harryhausen 1963 epic was released. It was produced by Robert Halmis Snr and Jnr ( Lifepod, Farscape ). It is shown on Channel 4 in 2 parts of about 90 minutes each. The cast includes familiar names such as Olivia Williams , Angus MacFadyen ( Braveheart ), Ciaran Hinds and Hugh Quarshie ( Highlander, Phantom Menace ).

As a boy, Jason's kingdom was conquered by his uncle, a beardy Dennis Hopper ( Waterworld ). Jason's father, the King, was murdered. When he comes of age Jason (now played by Jason London) is told of his heritage by a CGI centaur. He sets out to recover his birthright.

Evil Dennis captures Jason, and orders him on a Quest to recover the legendary Golden Fleece. If Jason fails, his mother will be executed.

Michael Gambon plays the shipwright, Argo, after whom the ship is named. A Nubian bard who calls himself Orpheus tags along, as does a token woman. Brian Thompson ( X-Files ) gives a much better portrayal of Hercules than Kevin Sorbo did!

Natascha Henstridge is the Queen of a band of untrustworthy Amazons. Derek Jacobi is a helpful soothsayer. Frank Langella ( Masters of the Universe ) is the King who owns the fleece ...

The crew nearly mutiny because they have no food. If they were real sailors they would catch some fish and worry about getting drinkable water instead!
