Futility, or The Wreck of the Titan

by Morgan Robertson
This novella, just shy of 100 pages long, is about a great steamship - a passenger liner called the Titan. It is the greatest ship afloat, but on its maiden voyage it hits an iceberg and sinks with great loss of life.

What is really incredible about this story is that it was written in the year 1898.

The story isn't really about the sinking of the ship; that's just the setting. The hero is a man with a set of values that he holds dear, but the rest of the world appears to find out-dated. While everyone else will lie and cheat to get what they want, he remains steadfastly honest.

The story also traces his emotional torture at the hands of his Jesus-freak bitch ex-girlfriend who tries to destroy him at every opportunity.
