The book was set in California, while the 1997 movie was set in North Carolina. This version takes place in Hawaii, although it does not use the local scenery as much as Hawaii 50.
Madison Iseman is traumatised by some buried trauma. Worse, when she returns home she discovers someone has written I Know What You Did Last Summer on her wall in fresh blood.
We then get an extended flashback to the relevant events in the previous summer. It turns out that Madison plays twin sisters. The bisexual one is Lennon, while her straight sister is Ally (short for Alison). They party with their racially diverse friends, while the helicopter parents supervise them from the kitchen. When five of the teenagers head off for a drive, they end up in a road traffic accident with a pedestrian. They assume the pedestrian is dead, because they let a drunken teenage girl check for a pulse. Then they try to hide the body, getting spotted by at least one stranger.
This is all a setup for the rest of the show, and it actually looks quite watchable. Lots of questions are asked, and the audience's curiosity should be engaged.
Ally/Lennon ( Madison Iseman ) cleans up after the previous episode. One of her friends works on a goat farm, so it seems pretty obvious where the goat's head came from.
In the flashbacks, we discover how the the death was covered up.
This is a slow-burning episode. However, the ending is incredibly violent.
Ally/Lennon ( Madison Iseman ) and her friends decide they cannot go to the cops with what they know about the double homicide. They start to investigate by themselves, and a few suspects are obvious. To start with, the creepy dope-dealer ...
Dale the goat-farmer claims to believe the dead girl did it. However, this is probably his own sense of guilt talking. We get a few confusing flashbacks which show different interpretations of his relationships with the girls.
It seems a lot of people like videoing themselves having sex, and then emailing the clips to others.
Ally/Lennon ( Madison Iseman ) opens a link that the killer e-mailed her, and discovers her sister's homemade porn site.
The obvious suspect is the dead girl. After all, no body was discovered. Well, not until the year is up.
The killer strikes again, with two more kills. These are gruesome, and the victims are unexpected.
The Sheriff interviews everyone who was at the funeral. The kids do not tell their secret, because they do not want to make things worse for themselves. Then they start doing some sleuthing of their own.
The obvious remaining suspect is the crazy lady who lives in the woods. They break in, and discover she has suspicious items in her home. When she gets home, they have to split up. For some reason, they do not check that everyone got home alive.
In the flashbacks, we discover the father had a secret.
We finally see what happened to the missing one after the kids split up. The others take their time looking for her, although her mother knows something is wrong and goes to the cops. Despite knowing a serial killer is on the loose, the Sheriff does not take the missing persons report seriously.
Ally/Lennon ( Madison Iseman ) discovers her father's secrets.
The police have a suspect in the murders, so they believe the case is closed.
There are three survivors from the main cast. Dylan is clearly the obvious suspect.
This solves a couple of mysteries. The first is, who is the killer? The second is, how come nobody could tell the sisters apart?
