This is based on the comics by Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead , and has a lot of that show's hallmarks. It is dark, dramatic and slow-moving. The main difference is that instead of being about a zombie apocalypse in Georgia, it is about a spate of demonic possessions in West Virginia.
The protagonist is Kyle Barnes (Patrick Fugit - Dead Birds ), a dirt-poor redneck who lives in a small town in Appalachia. The town's minister, Reverend Anderson, is Philip Glenister (AKA Gene Hunt in Life on Mars ). This is certainly a better career move than the terrible UK show Demons .
The protagonist and the minister team up to work as exorcists. In a show like Supernatural , that would be good clean fun. However, this show has a more sinister undertone. Exorcism fiction normalizes the superstitions that corrupt modern society. Lazy minds blame satanic possession for things like child abuse and homosexuality. This is not something that people should be encouraged to take seriously.
Kyle Barnes (Patrick Fugit - Dead Birds ) is tortured by memories of his abusive childhood. His single mother was possessed by a demonic entity. Kyle is living in his abusive mother's old home because his ex-wife has a restraining order against him. Even though the wife was demonically possessed she still got custody of their daughter!
The Sheriff (Querns from Oz) and his deputy (Kyle's brother in law) investigate a strange sighting in the woods. Someone has been crucifying racoons. Is this a case of everyday critter-bashing, or something more sinister?
A creepy thin man (Brent Spiner - Independence Day ) is in town.
JR Bourne ( Teen Wolf ) and Lee Tergesen ( Weird Science ) are buddies and co-workers. Then one kills the other's wife, in a disturbingly violent scene. Yes, it is mostly off-screen, but modern White Knight sexism dictates we should not see a female victimised on-screen. The result is that Tobias Beecher ends up back in prison. Well, since the local Sheriff is Querns we should hardly be suprised.
Kyle Barnes (Patrick Fugit - Dead Birds ) and Reverend Anderson (Philip Glenister - Life on Mars ) get called in to exorcise the killer. However, even if he is possessed and if the exorcism is successful, he would still have to live with the guilt ... and the prison sentance!
Kyle's over-protective foster-sister is having great sex with her husband the deputy. However, she has an important role in the plot. She discovers that a former acquaintance is in town, and she starts to obsess about him.
Reverend Anderson (Philip Glenister - Life on Mars ) visits Grace Zabriskie, upon whom he once performed an exorcism. However, he is now riven with doubts and thinks she might still be possessed.
The Deputy's wife has serious issues with a traveling salesman. It turns out that, decades earlier, he was a bully who gave her a hard time. The good news is, this explains why she is so keen to look after her foster brother: he protected her from the worst of it. The bad news is, she still has not gotten over what happened and someone from the regular cast is bound to take violent revenge on the bully.
Sheriff Querns (Reg E. Cathey - Fantastic Four (2013) ) investigates the creepy satanic place out in the woods. At least he is taking it seriously, and now he has a prime suspect.

The Deputy's wife discovers what happened to traveling salesman.

Well, this is rural USA where industrial accidents are a major cause of death. The Rev refuses to let Sheriff Querns (Reg E. Cathey - Fantastic Four (2013) ) arrest the creepy thin man (Brent Spiner - Independence Day ), although he does not hesitate to denounce the man as Satan in front of the entire population.
The cop's wife tries to pay off the blackmailer. But can he be trusted not to press charges?
