This starts with a news clip from the 1960s. A couple of biologists - John Hannah ( Spartacus: Blood and Sand ) and Christopher Heyderdahl ( Sanctuary ) - are interviewed about potential extinction-level events. Heyderdahl gives a generic response about viruses. Hannah, however, points out that fungi are a far bigger threat. If something were to change Earth's climate ...
The main story starts in the year 2013. Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal Mandalorian ) and his daughter live in a city in the USA. Their normal suburban lives are disrupted by the usual type of zom-pocalypse events, which eventually ends in tragedy.
Ten years later, Joel and his girlfriend Theresa 'Tess' Servopoulos ( Anna Torv ) are living in a walled town run by FEDRA - a US Government department that has become a dictatorship. There are two alternatives. One is to flee the town, and survive in the Fungus Zombie wilderness. The other is to join the Fireflies, a terrorist group that is killing more people than the the zombies.
Joel and Tess make a deal with the Fireflies. They will get free passage out of town if they escort Ellie Williams ( Bella Ramsey ) to some scientists in another town.
This is based on a computer game, so it is an example of adapting a story from one medium to another. Specifically, it is going from interactive C21st media to episodic television from the Twentieth Century. Because of the controversy about poor story-telling in the sequel, this is under a lot of scrutiny from the existing fans. Worse, because this version is aimed at an older more female-skewed audience the new storyline may be skewed as well. Certainly, Joel is sidelined as a character while his daughter and girlfriend get the majority of screen time.
However, the show has its own problems. The story starts like the first episode of Fear the Walking Dead , and switches to the final season of The Walking Dead . In other words it is all a bit generic by now, even to those who have not played the game.
