This is set in Dublin, Ireland, during the early 1980s. No, the Troubles are not mentioned - it concerns a different set of Government policies from the era.
The protagonists are a fairly generic pair, like in The Fades (2011) - the smart Black kid and the bland White one. Their goal is to collect a copy of each of the 72 movies banned by the Thatcher government under the Video Nasty purge, which for Americans is a bit like the Satanic Panic.
The boys have to go to England to get a copy of the last tape. The White boy's sister comes along too.
The trio get to the town in England. The locals are preparing for their annual Wicker Man festival, which the show does not dwell upon and the teenagers do not find unusual. They probably assume it is for fellow movie fans, not a literal pagan cult with human sacrifices.
The trio try to escape from their captors.
The trio have successfully escaped from their captors. They split up, and get picked off one at a time.
Is this like Texas Chainsaw Massacre with a family of killers, or Wicker Man with the whole village? It does not matter - the trio have been framed for murder, so everyone will treat them as guilty until proven innocent. The police detective is a stale male pale stereotype, but his sidekick is a young Black woman so there is still hope.
The boys go to save the girl. Of course, in this day and age she does not need saving. In fact, she is more competent than the boys are.
There is some setup for a second Season.
