In recent years there has been a noticeable revival of interest in the early
1970s cartoon show, Scooby Doo.
This may stem back to the success of the American TV series
X-Files
, which covers much the same ground but in a much more serious tone.
Indeed, X-Files creator Chris Carter has long acknowledged his debt to
the 1970s TV show
Night Stalker
. Somewhere between the two comes
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
, which actually uses the term Scooby Gang in reference to the heroes!
Over the last few years some feature-length updated 1990s Scooby Doo cartoons were made. In Autumn of 1999 we reviewed Scooby Doo on Zombie Island , and in this issue we reviewed Scooby Doo and the Alien Invaders . This year, 2001, we look forward to the new, live-action Scooby Doo film! The cast includes Sarah Michelle Gellar [ Buffy the Vampire Slayer ] as Daphne and Matthew Lillard [ Scream ] as Shaggy!
This is the follow-up to the excellent Scooby Doo on Zombie Island . The Scooby Gang are driving through the desert in the revamped Mystery Machine when, as always, they have engine trouble. As in just about every episode, the van always acts up when it's important to the plot. Of course, this time the engine fails because the driver crashes into a boulder when he's spooked by a low-flying UFO, but the point still stands. The plot is pretty much the usual Scooby Doo formula, but as a nice touch there are some self-referential lines of dialogue. Also, Scooby and Shaggy get girlfriends - I kid you not!
