ORBzine Book Reviews: "The Conan Chronicles"

Volume 1: The People Of The Black Circle

Conan

Most modern Fantasy is inspired to a greater or lesser degree by the works of J.R.R. Tolkien . However, we should not forget that Fantasy stories such as The Conan Chronicles by Robert E. Howard were popular long before The Hobbit or Lord of the Rings were written.

This is the first volume of a pair, featuring a large number of reprinted Conan stories. They have been arranged chronologically, so that Conan ages as they go on.

Unlike the Conan books published in the 1960s, these volumes do not have the L Sprague De Camp forewords to every story. That is a shame: the forewords helped explain the gaps between the stories, and helped space out Howard's works. Since the stories were not written in chronological order, this is certainly needed.
