[Season 1 !Season 2: Dark Ages !Season 3: Oregon Trail !Season 4: End Times ]
Eliza Hunter ( Geraldine Viswanathan ) is an angel, working in Heaven's Department of Dirt. She asks for a transfer to something more challenging, and ends up in the Department of Answered Prayers. The only other employee there is Craig Bog (Daniel Radcliffe - Harry Potter ), who has been stuck there for ten thousand years and has an impressive beard to show for it. Unfortunately it is understaffed because it was intended for a much smaller human population, and instead of angelic genies granting wishes they are basically functions as a lost-and-found.
When Eliza's ambitions exceed her ability, she runs to God (Steve Buscemi - Armageddon (1998) ) and asks him to sort out the world. Instead, God decides to blow up the Earth.
Eliza Hunter ( Geraldine Viswanathan ) has less than two weeks to solve an impossible prayer. She wants to hospitalise a couple of people in the hope they will kiss. Craig Bog (Daniel Radcliffe - Harry Potter ) has a more subtle approach.
God (Steve Buscemi - Armageddon (1998) ) has become obsessed with the talk show host Bill Maher, and orders Sanjay (Karan Soni - Corporate Animals (2018) ) to explode Bill's penis.
Laura has a new love interest. Yes, it turns out that - like Ugly Betty - she only dresses in frumpy clothes and is secretly quite attractive.
Eliza Hunter ( Geraldine Viswanathan ) and Craig Bog (Daniel Radcliffe - Harry Potter ) try to break up the new couple, so they can get back to granting the miracle.
Sanjay (Karan Soni - Corporate Animals (2018) ) is being followed by a camera crew. His real job involves helping God (Steve Buscemi - Armageddon (1998) ) with his daily ablutions. Luckily, Sanjay used to work in the Miracle department so he is the best person to help the team.
Sanjay (Karan Soni - Corporate Animals (2018) ) has decided to stay with the Miracles team. He and Eliza Hunter ( Geraldine Viswanathan ) both lived impressive lives while back on Earth, while Craig Bog (Daniel Radcliffe - Harry Potter ) used to be a caveman whose dead-end job was similar to his current position.
God (Steve Buscemi - Armageddon (1998) ) needs someone to talk to now that Sanjay is gone. Rose suggests he befriend a new prophet. Craig volunteers to help out, since he no longer feels needed by Eliza now she has Sanjay.
Unfortunately, Eliza and Sanjay are too much alike. They learn the hard way that they need Craig to help them.
This starts with a flashback of Rosie ( Lolly Adefope ) as she arrived in Heaven and became Executive Assistant to God (Steve Buscemi - Armageddon (1998) ). Now she actively wants Earth to be destroyed, so she can get out of her dead-end job.
Eliza Hunter ( Geraldine Viswanathan ), Sanjay (Karan Soni - Corporate Animals (2018) ) and Craig Bog (Daniel Radcliffe - Harry Potter ) need to extend Grandma's life. They need God to sign the Death Waiver. The good news is that he is illiterate. The bad news is that he has no tolerance for people who try to decieve him.
God (Steve Buscemi - Armageddon (1998) ) is about to destroy the world. While his restuarant, Lazy Susan's, is still in the planning stage he intends to move back with his parents. Of course, his siblings are far more successful than he is.
The team want to force the human couple to kiss by pressuring them with a kiss-camera. The only dissenting voice is Craig Bog (Daniel Radcliffe - Harry Potter ), who shares the humans' discomfort. Yes, it turns out he is secretly in love with Eliza Hunter ( Geraldine Viswanathan ).
God (Steve Buscemi - Armageddon (1998) ) has decided to call off the bet and spare the Earth. However, the deadline has already been set. Ironically, because God is such a klutz the Earth might be in more danger than it was when he wanted to destroy it.
The human couple have split up, so the Miracle Worker team need a lot of manpower to get them back together. They rope in the workers from all other departments.
Reviewed in our special supplement
Season One was based on a novel. This Season is an original piece, using the same cast but in completely different roles and setting - like American Horror Story ).
Alexandra Shitshoveller ( Geraldine Viswanathan ) does not want to join the family business and work for her father, Eddie Shitshoveller (Steve Buscemi - Armageddon (1998) ). Instead she goes to school, to be utterly modern. Of course, this version of pre-medieval history has everyone be completely stupid and superstitious.
Prince Chauncley (Daniel Radcliffe - Harry Potter ) is in the same position, trying to please his father King Cragmoor (Peter Serafinovic Shaun of the Dead ).
Alexandra Shitshoveller ( Geraldine Viswanathan ) and Maggie the Nun ( Lolly Adefope ) go to a pub quiz. The answers are either popular culture or pre-medieval junk science, so Al does not do as well as she expected. All her book-learning counts for nothing.
Al gets hired as a doctor by the local medical centre. The main doctor's cure for the common cold is for the patient to have leeches on his genitalia. This is not based on the balance of the Four Humours, but an effort to distract the mucus fairies. Since Al cannot work it out for herself, the boss confesses that his medical science is all made up. Will Al keep her mouth shut and try to help people, or self-sabotage and publicly denounce the science she claims to love?
Prince Chauncley (Daniel Radcliffe - Harry Potter ) is upset because his favourite duck has gone missing. He and Lord Vexler (Karan Soni - Corporate Animals (2018) ) discover the duck has been found by Mikey Shitshoveller (Jon Bass - Baywatch (2016)). Unfortunately Chauncley seems to have had a personality reset. In the previous episode, he seemed to be a good person who rejected his father's selfish and murderous ways. Now he has regressed to being willing to kill, and needs Vexler to explain the concept of guilt and remorse.
The episode starts with Lord Vexler (Karan Soni - Corporate Animals (2018) ), showing his backstory and his rise to power. King Cragmoor (Peter Serafinovic Shaun of the Dead ) runs the Kingdom as a meritocracy, and has promoted Vexler to his second-in-command. Now Vexler is trusted to make a peace treaty with the dreaded enemy. Prince Chauncley (Daniel Radcliffe - Harry Potter ) is sent along, to make it official. Things take a couple of unexpected twists, and Chauncley turns out to have hidden depths.
Alexandra Shitshoveller ( Geraldine Viswanathan ) and her father, Eddie Shitshoveller (Steve Buscemi - Armageddon (1998) ), go to ShitCon - a conference for people in the shit-shoveling industry. Someone has invented something that looks like a homage to The Hudsucker Proxy ... and will revolutionise shitting. Since Eddie was reluctant to consider using a longer handle on his shovel, he is less than happy at the invention of the latrine. But as the Luddites learned, labour-saving devices do not destroy jobs - they just relocate jobs into new sectors of employment.
Prince Chauncley (Daniel Radcliffe - Harry Potter ) wants to make friends with the peasants. Lord Vexler (Karan Soni - Corporate Animals (2018) ) arranges for the Prince to get an internship with Eddie Shitshoveller (Steve Buscemi - Armageddon (1998) ).
Mikey Shitshoveller (Jon Bass - Baywatch (2016)) joins up with a merry band of outlaws. They are a bunch of drug addicts, but Mikey is desperate to make friends. Luckily he has his sister Alexandra Shitshoveller ( Geraldine Viswanathan ) to try to save him. She should be helping her overworked father, but Mikey is as stupid as the Prince so they both need constant adult supervision.
King Cragmoor (Peter Serafinovic Shaun of the Dead ) invites his sister and brothers over to celebrate the harvest festival. Lord Vexler (Karan Soni - Corporate Animals (2018) ) points out that they are a family of insane warlords, and it is a good job they are not killing each other. Prince Chauncley (Daniel Radcliffe - Harry Potter ) takes it upon himself to create Family Games Night. Predictably, this just brings out the warlords' competitive streak.
Alexandra Shitshoveller ( Geraldine Viswanathan ) and her father, Eddie Shitshoveller (Steve Buscemi - Armageddon (1998) ) welcome Uncle Bert for Harvest Day. Unfortunately Alexandra is a bit of an SJW, and opposes everything that Bert says. After all, he is a strawman who spouts the usual crap about boot-straps.
Alexandra Shitshoveller ( Geraldine Viswanathan ) and her friend Maggie used to hang out all the time. Now Maggie has a career as a nun, although most of her work seems to involve some form of flagellation. The episode is about the decline of their friendship as they become aware of how they drifted apart over the last year.
Prince Chauncley (Daniel Radcliffe - Harry Potter ) wants to cheer up Alexandra, so he takes it upon himself to create a Music Festival. Lord Vexler (Karan Soni - Corporate Animals (2018) ) gets roped in to help out.
Eddie Shitshoveller (Steve Buscemi - Armageddon (1998) ) is horrified to discover that his vegetable garden was eaten by Gobbler, the royal goat. Prince Chauncley (Daniel Radcliffe - Harry Potter ) has a tough choice to make. He wants to improve his relationship with his father, King Cragmoor (Peter Serafinovic Shaun of the Dead ). However, he also wants to have a relationship with Alexandra. Which one will he choose?
Alexandra Shitshoveller ( Geraldine Viswanathan ) and Prince Chauncley (Daniel Radcliffe - Harry Potter ) have been hanging out a lot. But they are poor communicators, and both seem unwilling to declare themselves in a relationship. In order to help things along, the Prince decides to take Alexandra to an astronomy lecture.
Eddie Shitshoveller (Steve Buscemi - Armageddon (1998) ) gets a date of his own. Unfortunately the woman he is interested in turns out to be a Druid ... and his friends are prejudiced against Druids!
Eddie Shitshoveller (Steve Buscemi - Armageddon (1998) ) is depressed that his daughter Alexandra Shitshoveller ( Geraldine Viswanathan ) is hanging out all the time with her new boyfriend Archie. He tries to persuade her to stay, but just ends up inspiring her to live in Paris instead.
Prince Chauncley (Daniel Radcliffe - Harry Potter ) is upset that Alexandra has moved on from him. King Cragmoor (Peter Serafinovic Shaun of the Dead ) orders his son into an arranged marriage with a Valdrogian. Luckily, Chauncely and his new bride have a lot in common, so they get on very well.
Chauncely's story arc has always been about becoming mature and going against his father's wishes. What he consistently forgets is that the King is merely protecting the country from the Valdrogians.
The town is under attack by the Valdrogians. Alexandra Shitshoveller ( Geraldine Viswanathan ) formulates a plan to get her family to safety.
King Cragmoor (Peter Serafinovic Shaun of the Dead ) plans to take the treasury and flee aboard the royal yacht. Prince Chauncley (Daniel Radcliffe - Harry Potter ) decides to stay, and rescue the peasants. Lord Vexler (Karan Soni - Corporate Animals (2018) ) is cynical, and made to seem like a bad guy because of it ... although Alexandra says the same things he does.
Ezekiel Brown (Daniel Radcliffe - Harry Potter ) is preacher of a small town of farmers in the midwest USA, circa 1844. The town is decimated by a cholera epidemic, a reference to the fact this was filmed during the Coronavirus pandemic, Still, pretty grim stuff for a comedy.
Ezekiel prays to his god for help, and Steve Buscemi ( Armageddon (1998) ) arrives. It turns out that he is Benny the Teen, a famous robber, who is being hunted by The Gunslinger (Karan Soni - Corporate Animals (2018) ).
Ezekiel's only reliable ally is Prudence Aberdeen ( Geraldine Viswanathan ), who is unfortunately burdened by her husband Todd Aberdeen (Jon Bass - Baywatch (2016)).
Ezekiel Brown (Daniel Radcliffe - Harry Potter ) seems to be losing the favour of the pioneers. They prefer to look to Benny the Teen (Steve Buscemi - Armageddon (1998) ) for leadership. This becomes a problem when the wagon train reaches a mighty river. When the wagons are too overloaded to cross, Ezekiel wants to abandon some baggage but Benny wants to leave a person behind.
Prudence Aberdeen ( Geraldine Viswanathan ) wants to have adventures. However, she is still held back by her husband Todd Aberdeen (Jon Bass - Baywatch (2016)).
This episode was directed by Steve Buscemi himself. He previously directed episodes of The Sopranos, so he is something of a veteran in that profession.
Ezekiel Brown (Daniel Radcliffe - Harry Potter ) joins Todd Aberdeen (Jon Bass - Baywatch (2016) ) and the other men as they got on a hunting expedition. This leads on to a parody of some war-movie cliches, even though they are only hunting relatively harmless buffalo.
Prudence Aberdeen ( Geraldine Viswanathan ) wants to have adventures. She forces Benny the Teen (Steve Buscemi - Armageddon (1998) ) to teach her how to be a bandit. The Gunslinger (Karan Soni - Corporate Animals (2018) ) is still on their tail.
Benny reveals a bit of his backstory. The moral of the story is that freedom comes at the price of loneliness.
The wagon train stops at the Wild West town of Branchwater, which has a reputation for debauchery. It turns out the town has sold out and become civilised. Not too much, though - Todd Aberdeen (Jon Bass - Baywatch (2016) ) joins a card game with a bunch of cheats, and gambles away his fortune. Benny the Teen (Steve Buscemi - Armageddon (1998) ) bonds with the Gunslinger (Karan Soni - Corporate Animals (2018) ) over the fact that they are throwbacks to an earlier era, and their outdated lifestyle is all they have left. This ends in a bromance reminincent of Lego Batman and his arch-enemy, the Joker.
Todd's wife Prudence Aberdeen ( Geraldine Viswanathan ) still wants to have adventures, so she dresses as a whore. Ezekiel Brown (Daniel Radcliffe - Harry Potter ) gets told to loosen up, so he gets drunk on snake oil. Yes, this is the episode where he performs a disco version of She'll Be Coming Round The Mountain ... in assless chaps!
The pilgrims are robbed by a gang of bandits. It turns out that this is Benny's old gang, and the leader is his foster-daughter, Trig. He takes the opportunity to try and mend some bridges with her.
Luckily, a group of religious fundamentalists come along. The Preacher, on the rebound after being rejected by Prudence, decides to date and even marry one of the cult's women.
The pilgrims make it as far as Independence Rock, the halfway point on their transcontinental trek. Ezekiel assumes the ox-drawn wagons are going as fast as five miles per hour, but they are only going at walking pace – a mere THREE miles per hour. In other words, they are going much slower than he assumes … which means that his plan to get the wagon train to Oregon before winter is unlikely to be fulfilled.
It is Independence Day, the Fourth of July, so there is a carnival at Independence Rock. Ezekiel's new wife loves her god more than she loves America, and thus regards American patriots as being idolators. She orders Ezekiel to join her in a protest. This means coming into conflict with the chief of the patriots - a gay black man, obviously a reference to the title character of stage-play Hamilton.
Somehow the bounty hunter escaped from certain death, and tells Benny the Teen (Steve Buscemi - Armageddon (1998) ) what he overheard about about Trig's new plan.
The pioneers try to move on without Benny the Teen (Steve Buscemi - Armageddon (1998) ). Zeke has appointed himself the new wagonmaster, but he has problems as soon as the first of the oxen gets tired.
Benny is captured by a Native American warrior woman named Sheila ( Marisa Quintanilla ). She acts a lot like Diaz the biker girl in Brooklyn 99, so this is obviously going to be a woke modern-day deconstruction of tropes.
The US Army sends in General Pudding (as opposed to Colonel Custard) to drive the Native American tribe off their land so he can build a shopping mall there. Yes, the white man is greedy and evil. The tribe's chief (Wes Studi - Last of the Mohicans ) agrees to let Benny act as negotiator - yes, the white saviour trope. Of course, Benny screws it up ...
The moral of the story is that the story should not be about the protagonist. Well, the white man should not be thr protagonist if the story has a lot of native people as characters. Rather than be a positive ally to them in any meaningful way, and benefiting with personal growth of his own, they should be perfect and he should learn nothing from his experience. Yes, character development in general and the hero's journey in particular are bad things.
Ezekiel and Prudence have started having a lot of sex, which they cover for by pretending it is bible lessons. Unfortunately it turns out that, since they are both married to other people, this is technically what their god considers to be a sin.
Trig is back, intending to overcome Benny's reputation as the greatest bandit of all time. She thinks the only way to do it is to kill him. He tries to talk her round, and convince her that she should try to redeem herself the way he did.
Trig and the bandits make it to Oregon. Unfortunately the fact there is so much free stuff that there is no point in her stealing things any more. In order to justify her kleptomania, she must upset the political system. She picks Todd, the rich white man who is loud and obnoxious, as a proxy candidate for State Governor.
The rest of the pilgrims have failed to reach Oregon before the winter. They hide out in a barn, and resort to cannibalism. The only one who has any moral compass left is Benny the Teen (Steve Buscemi - Armageddon (1998) ), who tries to imitate the voice of their god. Of course, Buscemi played their god in Season One of the show.
Ezekiel rides into town to save Prudence. Benny the Teen (Steve Buscemi - Armageddon (1998) ) helps him take on Trig and her army of outlaws.
