[Season 1 !Season 2 !Season 3 !Season 4 ]
Eleanor has a secret, which she confesses to her soulmate. There appears to be a mix-up, and instead of being a secular saint she was just a normal person. Since the Good Place has unrealistically high standards, she should not be there.
Michael (Ted Danson - The Orville ) arranges for the laws of reality to be temporarily suspended. Everyone gets the superpower of flying. Except for Eleanor Shellstrop ( Kristen Bell ), who is too busy helping to clean up the mess. After all, she does not want anyone to suspect it might be her fault.
Eleanor Shellstrop ( Kristen Bell ) discovers that she is not the only person accidentally put in the wrong place. The supposedly perfect system must be seriously flawed.
Tahani Al-Jamil ( Jameela Jamil ) discovers Michael's secret list of rankings for the citizens. Eleanor and Jianyu are near the top, but Tahani herself is near the bottom. If she knew what we the audience know, she might suspect it was a reverse ranking. Instead she just gets emotionally insecure.
Michael (Ted Danson - The Orville ) blames himself for the problems, and decides to quit. Unfortunately, retirement for his kind is an eternity of torment known as The Eternal Shriek.
The Bad Place's management team, led by Trevor (Adam Scott - Hot Tub Time Machine 2 ), come to town. Michael (Ted Danson - The Orville ) is reluctant to hand over Eleanor Shellstrop ( Kristen Bell ), so he lets them stay until he can come to a solution.
The flashbacks are of Eleanor's earlier days. Not at all like Veronica Mars . She was still an outsider in High school, but it was by choice instead of exile.
Janet ( D'Arcy Carden ) has been rebooted, so she does not have access to her main database. She goes to Jason for help.
The Bad Place team have brought their Eleanor ( Tiya Sircar ), who bonds with Chidi.
The episode is basically an extended flashback to Chidi's life on Earth. He had good intentions, but was not a great friend.
Jason has fallen in love with Janet ( D'Arcy Carden ). Even more strange, it seems to be mutual. Well, they do have a lot in common.
The Mediocre Place has only one inmate. As the saying goes, a gilded cage is still a cage. It turns out that the Bad Place puts too much thought into its tortures. The best one seems to be the solitary confinement she has endured for decades.
Eleanor has a flashback of her mother Donna ( Leslie Grossman ).
Jason and Eleanor ( Kristen Bell ) get Janet ( D'Arcy Carden ) to take them back to face the music. Michael (Ted Danson - The Orville ) arranges a trial, so they can sort out who goes to the Good Place and who goes to the Bad Place.
Eleanor suddenly has a revelation that turns everything on its head. Ths good news is, this explains the first Season. Unfortunately Michael has to reset things so we can look forward to Season Two.
Michael (Ted Danson - The Orville ) resets everyone's memories and the storyline goes back to the first episode. His boss insists this is his second chance - there will not be a third one.
The first half of the episode is about Eleanor Shellstrop ( Kristen Bell ). She gets the note from herself, and goes in search of Chidi. On the way she meets Jianyu, who cannot talk to her. There is no sign of Tahani ( Jameela Jamil ).
The second half is the same events, but from Chidi's perspective.
As in the previous episode, this story is split between two characters. The first half is from Jianyu's perspective.
Michael (Ted Danson - The Orville ) has to reset the Good Place a second time, even though his boss insisted there would be no third attempt. But every time, sooner or later Eleanor Shellstrop ( Kristen Bell ) works out the secret and he has to secretly reset it again.
Eventually, Vicki ( Tiya Sircar ) and Michael's other employees decide to go on strike. It turns out that there are over three hundred of them, so it is impractical to run the Good Place. No wonder the boss thinks it is a waste of resources.
Eleanor ( Kristen Bell ) and Chidi try to help Michael (Ted Danson - The Orville ) focus on the importance of him learning human ethics. Unfortunately, when they make him realise that his immortality is at stake he flips out and has a mid-life crisis. Janet ( D'Arcy Carden ) becomes his blonde bimbo assistant.
Vicki ( Tiya Sircar ) plans to torture Tahani ( Jameela Jamil ) by organising a better party. This may sound a bit basic, but Tahani is incredibly shallow. Although Tahani has a background in event planning, Vicki is able to think outside the box and to add literally magical aspects to her party.
Eleanor's mother Donna ( Leslie Grossman ) pops up in a flashback.
Eleanor ( Kristen Bell ) and Chidi keep working on Michael (Ted Danson - The Orville ). He seems ignorant of the idea of The Trolley Problem, and uses his superpowers to create a simulation where they can actually live through it. Will Chidi kill one person to save five?
Janet ( D'Arcy Carden ) has been acting glitchy, and this endangers the whole neighbourhood. Michael (Ted Danson - The Orville ) tries to diagnose the source of the problem. This allows us a flashback to the time he first picked her to run the neighbourhood. They have been working together for so long that she is basically the nearest thing to a friend that he has.
Finally we get an acknowledgement of Janet's weird relationship with Jason in Season One .
To get over the emotional stress of losing Jason to Tahani ( Jameela Jamil ), Janet ( D'Arcy Carden ) creates a new boyfriend for herself - Derek (Jason Mantzoukas - The Disaster Artist (2017) ). He is weird, but since he is an artificial person created by another artificial person this is to be expected.
Team Cockroach have to get rid of Jason before Vicki ( Tiya Sircar ) finds out. However if they kill him themselves, especially for selfish reasons, this will be immoral. Somehow they must persuade Janet to do it.
Michael (Ted Danson - The Orville ) is confronted by Shaun, and plays along. Can Team Cockroach still trust him? Is he trying to send them a coded message?
Michael (Ted Danson - The Orville ) and Janet ( D'Arcy Carden ) get a hot air balloon that can fly everyone to the Good Place. Unfortunately it can only fly if everyone aboard it has become their best self. That means they cannot travel if they still have room for improvement.
To get to the portal to the Good Place, the team have to go through the Bad Place's office. They have to pose as demons named Rhonda, Diana, Jake, and Trent. As they hide in the reception area's museum, they see exhibits about things like the invention of man-splaining. Yes, Hell is all about micro-aggressions rather than actual aggressions.
Michael (Ted Danson - The Orville ) tries to bluff his way through a meeting with Shaun. His experiment has been so successful that there is an special ceremony in his honour. Unfortunately it is taking place in the
The Team get to the hall of judgement, and meet the Judge ( Maya Rudolf ). She sets them each a test to see if they have become better people.
Eleanor ( Kristen Bell ) and Chidi meet, and restart their relationship. This time it is not so one-sided: Eleanor starts to help Chidi to date a female scientist he knows.
Trevor (Adam Scott - Hot Tub Time Machine 2 ) joins the group, which he nicknames The Brainy Bunch. His reverse psychology seems to work.
Michael (Ted Danson - The Orville ) and Janet ( D'Arcy Carden ) return to Earth to help the group. Unfortunately Janet no longer has her powers while on Earth, so she has to pass herself off as a barmaid instead. Michael poses as an Australian librarian.
The Judge ( Maya Rudolf ) has not been informed of the hijinks, and will be very upset when she finds out.
Michael (Ted Danson - The Orville ) and Janet ( D'Arcy Carden ) are back on Earth. The bad news is the Judge ( Maya Rudolf ) has vowed to punish them if they leave. The good news is, Janet has her powers back.
Janet sets Tahani ( Jameela Jamil ) up with an ex-boyfriend named Larry Hemsworth, who has a lot in common with her and might be her perfect match. After all, as a paediatric surgeon he is the outcast of the Hemsworth acting dynasty. Unfortunately he intends to move to London, so if they get serious then Tahani will be expected to quit the Group.
Can Eleanor ( Kristen Bell ) save the day?
The Brainy Bunch discover what has really been happening. This leads them to personal crisis. Worse, since they now know about the Good Place their motivation for virtue is considered corrupted, so they are no longer eligible to earn Virtue points.
Chidi lectures his students about the three classic theories of virtue. Tahani has chosen Aristotle's theory, Jason and Eleanor have different ones. Chidi himself has chosen nihilism.
Eleanor ( Kristen Bell ), as always, has an epiphiny.
Michael (Ted Danson - The Orville ) takes Tahani and Jason to Florida. Their mission is to help Jason save his father. Unfortunately the father, known as Donkey Doug, is the one who proved to be a terrible role model for Jason.
Michael takes Eleanor ( Kristen Bell ) to Tarantula Springs, Nevada. It turns out that Eleanor's mother Donna ( Leslie Grossman ) faked her death and is living under an assumed name. While Eleanor is convinced her mother is scamming innocent people, Michael wants the two women to bond.
Chidi accompanies Tahani to Budapest, so she can make amends to her sister Kamilah. Jason and Janet ( D'Arcy Carden ) hang out in the museum.
Michael (Ted Danson - The Orville ) takes Eleanor ( Kristen Bell ) to a library, and lets her watch her deleted memories. This is a nice clip show, showing us clips of stories we have not seen before.
Michael (Ted Danson - The Orville ) and Janet ( D'Arcy Carden ) visit the most high-scoring human, Doug (Michael McKean - Good Omens ). He has scored the highest ever, due to his organic lifestyle and dedication to helping every living thing.
Michael (Ted Danson - The Orville ) and Janet ( D'Arcy Carden ) visit Niall the head Accountant (Stephen Merchant - Logan (2016) ). The points system is not working as intended, and Michael wants proof that Shaun has corrupted it somehow.
and the others are stuck together in Janet's void. They all take on Janet's appearance, since their human bodies were disentigrated on arrival. Since they have no part in the main storyline, they have their own soap opera sub-plots instead. Eleanor ( Kristen Bell ) tells Chidi the truth about their relationship, while Jason and Tahani discover Janet's secret marriage to Jason. This leads on to a debate about how personal identity is linked to memory.
Michael (Ted Danson - The Orville ) and Janet ( D'Arcy Carden ) take the humans to the Good Place. They do not have proof that Shaun corrupted the points system, but it turns out that nobody has gone to the Good Place in 521 years. Yes, according to the points system Mindy St Claire was the most morally pure person in five centuries!
Tahani tries to make things right between Jason and Janet. Unfortunately she just seems to make it worse.
Michael (Ted Danson - The Orville ) and Janet ( D'Arcy Carden ) take the humans to the International Hole of Pancakes. The Judge ( Maya Rudolf ) listens to the explanation of why the points system no longer works. She even pulls Shaun in, to balance out a replacement system.
Rather than put the four humans back on Earth again, the new plan is to duplicate the experiment with four new humans. Michael is to build a duplicate neighbourhood, in the back yard of Mindy St Claire's Medium Place. Janet builds people to populate it, with help from Derek (Jason Mantzoukas - The Disaster Artist (2017) ).
Shaun chose the four new candidates himself. The Judge ( Maya Rudolf ) has vetted them, to ensure that they are average and not extreme examples like serial killers. However, Shaun's strategy is more subtle than that. He has chosen subjects with personal links to the Brainy Bunch.
Eleanor ( Kristen Bell ) poses as the architect of the new Good Place. She welcomes two more new candidates. One is the most selfish man imaginable, while the other is an incredibly bland old lady.
The Judge ( Maya Rudolf ) has appointed Chidi as the fourth candidate. This is the good news. The bad news is that Eleanor ( Kristen Bell ) gets so frustrated with the other candidates that she wants to quit.
Janet ( D'Arcy Carden ) is very busy with running the simulation, so she no longer has time for a relationship with Jason. Luckily Tahani is still available for him.
Eleanor ( Kristen Bell ) and Michael (Ted Danson - The Orville ) hope that Chidi's ethics class will sort out the others. Unfortunately Chidi is Chillaxing - a combination of the words Chidi and Relaxing.
Eleanor ( Kristen Bell ) is left in charge of the neighbourhood.
Michael visits Evil Janet ( D'Arcy Carden ) and recounts the events of this episode to her.
Brent has written a novel, a whodunnit with a detective named Chip Driver. He plans a massive book-launch party. Unfortunately, the book is cheesy crap and Simone is not afraid to say so. Yes, both of them are still jerks in their own respective ways.
It is the last day of the experiment, a year after the new arrivals. Michael has a last-ditch plan that involves giving the test subjects an ethical dilemma.
Simone originally thought the Good Place was a halucination. Now she has put her solipcism aside, and has somehow deduced the truth about it.
Meanwhile, Eleanor ( Kristen Bell ) and the other humans hang out and throw themselves the funerals they never got to experience after their first deaths.
Michael (Ted Danson - The Orville ) has to convince his former boss Shaun to agree to the plan. If they fail, then it will take a billion years for humans to evolve in the rebooted universe.
Michael (Ted Danson - The Orville ) is in charge of re-training the demons. Unfortunately the trainees are not used to psychological torture, and prefer to use the traditional chainsaw-bear. Vicki ( Tiya Sircar ) is the only demon who understands, and is excellent at explaining it to the others. Unfortunately Michael is less than happy to work with his former rival.
With the new system up and running, our heroes are automatically accepted into the Good Place. They are the first people to have entered it in five hundred years, so they have a lot to get used to.
Chidi meets one of his childhood heroes - Hypatia of Alexandria ( Lisa Kudrow ), who now goes by the name of Patty. She lets them know that things are not exactly what they expected.
After sorting out everything else in the universe, the gang now have to sort out the Good Place.
The guys have been hanging out in the Good Place for thousands of Jeremy Bearimys. Eventually, they drift apart and end up wanting different things.
This is all a bit depressing. It is always nice to see a show that has a proper ending, but since this one concerns the afterlife there are a limited number of ways things can turn out. The result is something similar to the ending of Vampire Diaries , but at least that show tied things up in the final act rather than taking sixty whole minutes to do it.
