Michael (Ted Danson - The Orville ) arranges for the laws of reality to be temporarily suspended. Everyone gets the superpower of flying. Except for Eleanor Shellstrop ( Kristen Bell ), who is too busy helping to clean up the mess. After all, she does not want anyone to suspect it might be her fault.

Janet ( D'Arcy Carden ) and Jason take Eleanor Shellstrop ( Kristen Bell ) to the one place of relative safety. It is somewhere that is neither good nor bad, but is really mediocre.
The Mediocre Place has only one inmate. As the saying goes, a gilded cage is still a cage. It turns out that the Bad Place puts too much thought into its tortures. The best one seems to be the solitary confinement she has endured for decades.
Eleanor has a flashback of her mother Donna ( Leslie Grossman ).
Jason and Eleanor ( Kristen Bell ) get Janet ( D'Arcy Carden ) to take them back to face the music. Michael (Ted Danson - The Orville ) arranges a trial, so they can sort out who goes to the Good Place and who goes to the Bad Place.

Vicki ( Tiya Sircar ) plans to torture Tahani ( Jameela Jamil ) by organising a better party. This may sound a bit basic, but Tahani is incredibly shallow. Although Tahani has a background in event planning, Vicki is able to think outside the box and to add literally magical aspects to her party.
Eleanor's mother Donna ( Leslie Grossman ) pops up in a flashback.

To get to the portal to the Good Place, the team have to go through the Bad Place's office. They have to pose as demons named Rhonda, Diana, Jake, and Trent. As they hide in the reception area's museum, they see exhibits about things like the invention of man-splaining. Yes, Hell is all about micro-aggressions rather than actual aggressions.
Michael (Ted Danson - The Orville ) tries to bluff his way through a meeting with Shaun. His experiment has been so successful that there is an special ceremony in his honour. Unfortunately it is taking place in the

The Judge ( Maya Rudolf ) has not been informed of the hijinks, and will be very upset when she finds out.
Michael (Ted Danson - The Orville ) and Janet ( D'Arcy Carden ) are back on Earth. The bad news is the Judge ( Maya Rudolf ) has vowed to punish them if they leave. The good news is, Janet has her powers back.
Janet sets Tahani ( Jameela Jamil ) up with an ex-boyfriend named Larry Hemsworth, who has a lot in common with her and might be her perfect match. Unfortunately he intends to move to London, so if they get serious then Tahani will be expected to quit the Group.
Can Eleanor ( Kristen Bell ) save the day?
The Brainy Bunch discover what has really been happening. This leads them to personal crisis. Worse, since they now know about the Good Place their motivation for virtue is considered corrupted, so they are no longer eligible to earn Virtue points.
Chidi lectures his students about the three classic theories of virtue. Tahani has chosen Aristotle's theory, Jason and Eleanor have different ones. Chidi himself has chosen nihilism.
Eleanor ( Kristen Bell ), as always, has an epiphiny.

and the others are stuck together in Janet's void. They all take on Janet's appearance, since their human bodies were disentigrated on arrival. Since they have no part in the main storyline, they have their own soap opera sub-plots instead. This leads on to a debate about how personal identity is linked to memory.
Michael (Ted Danson - The Orville ) and Janet ( D'Arcy Carden ) take the humans to the Good Place. They do not have proof that Shaun corrupted the points system, but it turns out that nobody has gone to the Good Place in 521 years. Tahani tries to make things right between Jason and Janet. Unfortunately she just seems to make it worse.
Michael (Ted Danson - The Orville ) and Janet ( D'Arcy Carden ) take the humans to the International Hole of Pancakes. The Judge ( Maya Rudolf ) listens to the explanation of why the points system no longer works. She even pulls Shaun in, to balance out a replacement system.
Rather than put the four humans back on Earth again, the new plan is to duplicate the experiment with four new humans. Michael is to build a duplicate neighbourhood, in the back yard of Mindy St Claire's Medium Place. Janet builds people to populate it, with help from Derek (Jason Mantzoukas - The Disaster Artist (2017) ).
Michael (Ted Danson - The Orville ) has a panic attack, so Eleanor ( Kristen Bell ) poses as the architect in his place. She does a great job of introducing the new candidates to her Good Place.
Shaun chose the four new candidates himself. The Judge ( Maya Rudolf ) has vetted them, to ensure that they are average and not extreme examples like serial killers. However, Shaun's strategy is more subtle than that. He has chosen subjects with personal links to the Brainy Bunch.
Eleanor ( Kristen Bell ) poses as the architect of the new Good Place. She welcomes two more new candidates. One is the most selfish man imaginable, while the other is an incredibly bland old lady.
Derek (Jason Mantzoukas - The Disaster Artist (2017) ) is jealous of Jason's relationship with Janet ( D'Arcy Carden ).
The Judge ( Maya Rudolf ) has appointed Chidi as the fourth candidate. This is the good news. The bad news is that Eleanor ( Kristen Bell ) gets so frustrated with the other candidates that she wants to quit.

Brent has written a novel, a whodunnit with a detective named Chip Driver. He plans a massive book-launch party. Unfortunately, the book is cheesy crap and Simone is not afraid to say so. Yes, both of them are still jerks in their own respective ways.
It is the last day of the experiment, a year after the new arrivals. Michael has a last-ditch plan that involves giving the test subjects an ethical dilemma.
Simone originally thought the Good Place was a halucination. Now she has put her solipcism aside, and has somehow deduced the truth about it.
The Judge ( Maya Rudolf ) convenes the meeting to determine if the experiment was successful. Michael (Ted Danson - The Orville ) and Janet ( D'Arcy Carden ) have proof that it mostly worked. Mostly.
Meanwhile, Eleanor ( Kristen Bell ) and the other humans hang out and throw themselves the funerals they never got to experience after their first deaths.
The Judge ( Maya Rudolf ) plans to reboot the entire universe. Janet ( D'Arcy Carden ) has hidden the reboot device, which is just a delaying action. Luckily all the Janets in existence all help out.
Meanwhile, Eleanor ( Kristen Bell ) and the other humans have Michael (Ted Danson - The Orville ) reboot Chidi's consciousness. We get to see Chidi's childhood.

After sorting out everything else in the universe, the gang now have to sort out the Good Place.
The guys have been hanging out in the Good Place for thousands of Jeremy Bearimys. Eventually, they drift apart and end up wanting different things.
This is all a bit depressing. It is always nice to see a show that has a proper ending, but since this one concerns the afterlife there are a limited number of ways things can turn out. The result is something similar to the ending of Vampire Diaries , but at least that show tied things up in the final act rather than taking sixty whole minutes to do it.
