[Season 1 !Season 2 !Season 3 !Season 4 !Season 5 !Season 6 !Season 7 !Season 8 ]
The protagonist, Elena Gilbert ( Nina Dobrev ) is a teenage girl who just lost her parents. Her brother deals with the loss by becoming the school drug-dealer. Together they live with their mother's younger sister, who is still in her twenties.
A new boy named Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) joins the girl's class at school. He looks slightly too old to be a High School kid - but unbeknownst to the other characters, he is a vamp and is old enough to remember the American Civil War (as in True Blood ). The vamp and the human seem destined to have some kind of relationship (as in Twilight ).
This series is based in a series of books from the early Nineties, which pre-date Twilight by at least a decade. The show is Kevin Williamson 's return to the small screen, and he seems perfect for the job. He virtually started the modern Horror genre with the Scream series, and re-invented the teenage drama with Dawson's Creek. That all seems so long ago now.
The disappearances are on the increase, and it looks like Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) is to blame. His only pastime is tormenting his younger brother, who is tee-total on human blood. Like so many trendy vamps these days - Mitchell in Being Human , for example.
Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) the token Black chick's supposed psychic powers actually seem to manifest themselves, although only when the vamp is around.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) decides to stay in town, so he casts suspicion for the killings onto a vicious Mountain Lion. Not everyone is fooled ...
It is the night of the big dance, and everyone is invited. Damon goes along with his blonde bitch (the sheriff's daughter). They have a similar distaste for the Twilight series!
Damon also plants seeds of doubt in Bella's mind about his brother, Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ). They fell out over a woman named Katherine (back in 1865!), and have blamed each other ever since.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) is safely incarcerated. Well, he is incarcerated. Safe is a different matter. He still has his vampiric abilities, and does everything he can to escape.
The school holds a bikini car-wash to raise money for the Athletics Dept. The good vamp lends a hand. Unfortunately, his GF Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) is beginning to suspect.
The drug dealer manages to mess things up with his GF. In contrast, the hot Auntie is warming up to her old flame, the TV reporter.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) is back, and that is not good news. Luckily he has his own agenda, rather than just wanting to kill random humans.
However, the human conspiracy are on the look-out for vampiric activity. They are prepared for action as well, with special weaponry!
The Founders Council know that the vamps are onto them. But they never suspect Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) ...
Bonnie the psychic girl's grandmother ( Jasmine Guy ) is also gifted. This might prove useful in the story arc.
Vicki the newly embraced female Vamp wants her old life back, like in True Blood ... and that is very bad news for all involved.
Lexi ( Arielle Kebble ), a centuries-old vamp pal of the Brothers, comes to town.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) wants his amulet back, but Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) the psychic girl knows he is trouble and does the opposite of whatever he wants. He also alienates Caroline ( Candice Accola ) the bitchy Blonde he brainwashed. But he has a cunning plan ...
Despite the events of the previous ep, Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) and his brother Stefan are still on speaking terms. Damon has a masterplan that he came to town to enact.
Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) the Witch is having trouble with her amulet. Her ancestor, the witch, is haunting her. She knows about Damon's masterplan.
There is a new history teacher in town, a man named Alaric. He wears a mysterious ring, and has a mysterious past.
Things progress more or less predictably from the end of the previous ep. There is a new vamp in town, and when he starts leaving bodies around the brothers have to hunt him down. There is also a vampire killer in town ...
Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) finally manages to see a portrait of Katherine. And it turns out the brothers are not the only supernatural creatures in town with an agenda!
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) takes Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) on a road trip to Georgia, to meet his friend Bree ( Gina Torres ). However, there is unfinished business from the Lexi incident ...
Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) goes looking for the witch. He meets her grandmother.
Elena's brother goes to the library to research local folklore. He finds a lot of stuff on vamps, and even gets a new GF!
The title is a reference to the 1950s-based movie Pleasantville . The town High School hosts a 1950s-tmhemed dance.
Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) the witch is romanced by a barkeeper, and the heroine's brother is getting attention from the cool chick in the library.
The vamp-hunter learns more about the Salvatore brothers. His wife Isobel ( Mia Kirshner ) knew Damon, and might be linked to Elena ...
The vamp-girl has her own plans with regards to getting her mother back. This involves hostages.
The witches finally agree to open the tomb. But nobody likes Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ), and he does not trust them either. Tensions rise ...
Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) goes searching for her birth mother. But she does not like what she finds.
Melinda Clarke pops up as a small-town, low-rent version of her character in The O.C.. She is mother of Matt the quarter-pounder.
Kelly Hu is back, in command of a cadre of American Civil War era vamps, and she wants to take over the town again. Even Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) is smart enough to realise that farming humans on Slavery-era plantations is a bad idea. Unfortunately, the villains have more than numbers on their side: as vampires age they get smarter and stronger.
Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) is captured by the scumbag vamps. Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ), Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) and Teacher the Vampire-Slayer must put aside their differences to save him.
Meanwhile, a body is discovered ...
Elena's Uncle (David Anders - Alias, Heroes ) comes to town. He knows more than anyone else about what is going on.
Damon's budding bromance with Alaric the Vamp Hunter continues. They have so much in common, after all. Both of them have been abandoned by the vampiric succubae they love.
Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) is finding it harder and harder to fight his craving for human blood.
The girls compete in the town beauty pageant.
Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) is in the basement, suffering withdrawal. He has extended flashbacks to when he was first turned.
Boone and the Teacher go looking for the mysterious Isobel ( Mia Kirshner ). They know she was in contact with David Anders, so they check up on him. He has got a secret agenda of his own ...
Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) has not had human blood in decades, so he is now unable to fully control his urges. This is a big problem, because John Gilbert (David Anders - Alias, Heroes ) has made the Founders Council paranoid.
The evil vamps have left town, except for Kelly Hu and her daughter.
Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) the witch is back, and it is just as well because her powers are needed.
Isobel ( Mia Kirshner ) is in town. She demands a meeting with her daughter Elena ( Nina Dobrev ), who she then pressurizes into handing over the Gilbert device. She and Katherine, her boss, want to maintain the balance of power by helping John Gilbert (David Anders - Alias, Heroes ) kill the Tomb vampires. Of course, they may have another secret that Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) guesses at.
Isobel is a complete bitch. She is even worse than Damon when it comes to psychopathic violence. As Damon explains it, a vamp must really TRY to feel something human. Isobel took the easy way out, and lost her humanity.
This is the Season Finale. Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) must attend the Miss Mystic Falls pageant.
The Tomb Vamps plan to massacre everyone in town, starting with the founding families. John Gilbert (David Anders - Alias, Heroes ) has a super-weapon that can stop them.
The long-awaited twist comes when we least expect it.
Our heroes realise that something strange was going on, since Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) cannot be in two places at the same time.
John Gilbert (David Anders - Alias, Heroes ) is written out and probably will not be back again. This writer gets the feeling that his body might turn up at some suitably dramatic occasion, however.
Katherine stalks Elena's friends. Worse, she plays mind-games with Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) ... And he is stupid enough to give her what she wants!
Katherine's Agenda is to break up Elena's relationship.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) provoked the local werewolf, and now comes the backlash. The Lady Sheriff has been nothing but a pretty face so far. Now we see what she can really do.
Thanks to the magic of flashbacks, we get to see even more of Katherine's manipulations. She is planning something that involves werewolves ...
The trio have to clean up after the previous episode. They go after the werewolf before he comes after them again. He has the moonstone, the key to Katherine's evil plan.
Caroline ( Candice Accola ) the Sheriff's daughter tries to bond with her mother. Will it work?
It is the town's Masquerade ball. As usual, this large social function is unlikely to pass off without at least two civilian fatalities. Especially since Katherine ( Nina Dobrev ) has two plans in motion. First she wants to extort the Moonstone out of the Salvatore Brothers. Secondly, she wants to force Tyler Lockwood to invoke the werewolf curse.
Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) is kidnapped by a couple of rogue vamps including Rose ( Lauren Cohan ). They want to trade her to Katherine's arch-enemies, the First Family - the oldest and most powerful vampires in existence. Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) rush to rescue her ...
Blondie befriends the new werewolf. This probably will not end well, will it?
Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) interrogates Katherine, and gets the story about the First Family and the Moonstone.
Blondie confesses to Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) that she said too much to wolf-boy Tyler.
Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) the witch bonds with Elena's brother. She also meets the new kid in school, who is from a Louisiana family with connections to Salem. Are they voodoo folk?
Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) and the vamp-babe go looking for a way to contact the First Family.
Elijah the uber-vamp comes to town. But he is willing to make a deal, to forward his murky agenda ...
The dead werewolf's GF comes looking for him. Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) is his usual charmless self, and provokes her ...
Tyler the teen wolf's first transformation is due. He has Caroline the Vampire Barbie to help him, of course.
The werewolf pack are still in town, looking for payback. They know about the friendship between Vampire Barbie Caroline and Tyler the werewolf ...
John Gilbert (David Anders - Alias, Heroes ) is back. He is still creepy and untrustworthy, but he is the only backup the guys have.
The wolfpack are back, after the moonstone. Elijah the Original is also in town.
Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) has a plan of her own, involving Elijah's witches.
Vampire Barbie and the werewolf boy are nowhere to be seen. Not surprising after the way things were heading for them.
Elena's brother and her witch friend are still hanging out.
Elijah the Uber-vamp is still in town - but Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) has a plan to kill him (courtesy of John Gilbert and Katherine). John Gilbert (David Anders - Alias, Heroes ) is after Alaric's ring - no pun intended.
Elijah the Uber-Vamp's tame warlock tries to undo what the Brothers achieved. But things go badly ...
Barbie tells her BF the truth. But he does not take it the way she hoped ...
Double-cross follows double-cross.
Barbie's BF has trouble dealing with the truth. He even accuses her mother, the sheriff, of covering it up.
Klaus is in town, in a manner of speaking. He wants to kill the only person who still poses a threat to him - Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) the Witch. The showdown is at the High School's annual Sixties dance.
Vampire Barbie is still hanging around with her BF. But Sheriff Mom is planning something herself.
Elijah tells the truth behind the Curse.
Klaus (Joseph Morgan - Ben Hur (2006) ) is in town, and he has an evil plan of his own. He needs to sacrifice a werewolf and a vampire at his ceremony.
Our heroes argue over what is the best way to protect Elena ( Nina Dobrev ). But it is a full moon tonight, so rescuing the werewolf is more dangerous than usual.
Blondie still does not know how much her BF and mother know.
Klaus (Joseph Morgan - Ben Hur (2006) ) holds his sacrifice ceremony.
A couple of supporting characters get written out.
The Lady Sheriff makes her play. Unfortunately, this means blundering into everyone else's business.
The town's big function is a public showing of Gone With The Wind. Nobody comments on how inappropriate this must be towards the African-American population. Worse, Damon's dying hallucinations are of the town's very own Scarlet O'Hara - Katherine!
Wolf-boy (Tyler) and Blondie (Caroline) bond. They both need the same thing.
Tyler’s mom calls in HRG from Heroes to deal with vampire Barbie. But she discovers a secret.
Klaus (Joseph Morgan - Ben Hur (2006) ) takes Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) to their old hangout, Chicago. We get some extended flashbacks to the 1930s. Stefan fell in love with Klaus’ sister Rebekah ( Clare Holt ), and Klaus was on the run from vamp-hunter Michael (Sebastian Roche - Roar, Odyssey 5, Supernatural ). Yes, there is a reason that Klaus chose Stefan.
Elena’s brother can see ghosts!
With Rebekah ( Clare Holt ) back in the game, Katherine tries to get Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) on her side. When he turns her down (predictably) she turns to Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ).
Damon and the Sheriff try to deal with HRG. Blondie is typically ungrateful to Damon, even though he saved her.
Elena’s brother can now talk with his ex-GF’s ghost. But he has to choose - her or the witch?
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) and Katherine are on their little road trip to find a way to kill Klaus (Joseph Morgan - Ben Hur (2006) ). Naturally they do not bother checking their messages, or they would discover that Klaus has taken Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) and Rebekah ( Clare Holt ) back to Mystic Falls!
They do discover, however, that Klaus has an arch-enemy: a vamp named Michael (Sebastian Roche - Supernatural ) who hunts other vamps. They assume that the enemy of their enemy will be their friend. This is typical of their narrow-minded outlook.
Stefan is under thrall to Klaus, who makes everyone do the usual terrible things. Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) is held hostage, Tyler the wolf-boy is turned into a hybrid, and Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) the witch is given an hour to find the magical cure.
She needs to contact the ghost of the original witch, who died a thousand years ago. Luckily the school football team’s quarter-pounder wants to contact his sister’s ghost, since she is now haunting him. He volunteers ...
Klaus (Joseph Morgan - Ben Hur (2006) ) has left town. He has left Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ), in his asshole Ripper persona, as Elena's bodyguard. She is ungrateful for the attention, and gathers her cabal of friends to outsmart him.
Rebekah ( Clare Holt ) was left behind too. Despite last week accusing 21st century women of dressing like prostitutes, she adapts to High School by becoming a flirty cheerleader. She has the Hybrid in her sights. And he is sired by Klaus, so he is brainwashed into doing whatever it takes to please his Master.
Katherine is still trying to revive Michael, the undead hunter of vampires. His dietary requirements are unusual ...
Thanks to Vicki making a break in the wall between worlds last ep, this time the town is overrun by ghosts. This is a great chance to tie up a few loose ends.
Ana must help her BF to get the witch. Lexi gives Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) a Detox, with help from Elena ( Nina Dobrev ). Mason Lockwood leads Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) into a booby-trapped tomb in order to get a weapon that can kill Klaus (Joseph Morgan - Ben Hur (2006) ).
The Tomb vamps are back ... It is the annual Founders Day celebration, which always ends in a bloodbath anyway. The only good vamp ready to fight them is ... Blondie!
There are some strange omissions from the list of the undead. Elena’s parents don’t make an appearance, although they were major guest stars with all the attendant problems of budget and scheduling.
As for the Klaus plot ... Rebekah ( Clare Holt ) is in town, but is nowhere to be seen. And there is no word from Katherine about Michael. Unsurprising due to the cliff-hanger ending last ep.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) told Alaric about the secret cave. Ric tells Elena ( Nina Dobrev ), who confronts Rebekah ( Clare Holt ) about it. Rebekah gives Elena a retelling of the origin story of the Originals. They were peaceful Vikings who settled in the New World, in what is now Virginia. Their father, Michael (Sebastian Roche - Odyssey 5 ), and mother ( Alice Evans ) brought them there to escape a plague in Europe, but found the place infested with Werewolves. Luckily, the Originals' Mother had witchcraft on her side.
We get to find out how the white oak became important, and how Vervane got its power.
The Originals' father, Mikael (Sebastian Roche - Odyssey 5 ), is in town, and sets a trap for Klaus (Joseph Morgan - Ben Hur (2006) ). The showdown is set, but will Klaus take the bait? And where is Katherine?
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) has a secret plan. This leads on to a shocking series of double-crosses.
Klaus (Joseph Morgan - Ben Hur (2006) ) wants his family back. Naturally he is too lazy to look for them himself, or even to add some cops or manhunters to his army of hybrids. Instead he orders Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) to find Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ). If they fail, he'll start killing the people they love.
Jeremy starts hanging out with Tyler Lockwood. The others do not trust Tyler, because he is still sired by Klaus.
Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) orders Klaus (Joseph Morgan - Ben Hur (2006) ) to move his Hybrid army out of town. Naturally, Klaus refuses. A battle of wills ensues, with innocent bystanders caught in the middle.
Klaus orders Tyler to bite Blondie. Naturally, Tyler refuses. But is breaking a sire-bond really that easy? And what is Klaus' plan for Blondie?
Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) and Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) the witch go on a road trip to find Bonnie's mom. They need the extra witch-power to unlock the special coffin. But Klaus (Joseph Morgan - Ben Hur (2006) ) is predictably one step ahead, and has a hybrid on stake-out.
Tyler gets some help breaking the sire bond. Yes, HRG is back in town.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) investigates Alaric's new GF, the lady doctor. She is a suspected serial-killer, since someone killed her ex-husband. Her secret is the method she uses to cure near-fatal injuries. But is she the killer?
Klaus (Joseph Morgan - Ben Hur (2006) ) has three of his coffins back, but Elijah is loose again. The two sets of brothers have a chat over dinner.
Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) and her mother work on the last coffin.
The killer strikes again, nailing HRG. With vamp blood in his system, he must feed or die. But he hates vamps more than he loves life.
Klaus' mother ( Alice Eve ) holds a soiree. The great and the good of the town are invited. The lady sheriff is nowhere in sight, though. The serial killer plot is only mentioned in passing at the very start, to explain why Alaric is in hospital.
Rebekah ( Clare Holt ) wants to kill Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) as petty revenge for the daggering. This would break the treaty rules, so Rebekah goes for the hurt instead. She takes the quarterback as her date.
Klaus' mother has her own plan to keep her wayward son in check. This involves Elena's assistance.
The supposedly secret plan is the talk of the town. With a cast of thousands involved, it is only a matter of minutes before Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) blabs to Elijah. He sends Rebekah ( Clare Holt ) to hold Elena hostage, then orders the Salvatore Brothers to halt the witches' spell.
The spell seems to have a few flaws. The vamps are linked, but Klaus (Joseph Morgan - Ben Hur (2006) ) is affected least of all. Since the whole purpose is to stop Klaus, this seems like a waste of time.
Alaric and the Lady Doc have a run-in with Klaus' brother. The vamp is not the dangerous one.
Alaric is the main suspect for the Founder Murders. Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) believes he is innocent, but has trouble proving it.
Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) is going Cold Turkey on human blood. Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) tries to help him get over it - and harks back to a similar Founder Murder in 1912. The two lads fell in with a gorgeous female prize-fighter named Sage ( Cassidy Freeman ), who indirectly unleashed Stefan's Ripper side.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) bumps into Sage ( Cassidy Freeman ). Luckily he had an extended flashback about her in the previous ep, so we all know who she is. She is obsessed with Rebekah's suicidal brother Finn, who left town with his mother. Damon parties with Sage and Rebekah ( Clare Holt ), so he can find out what Rebekah and Klaus (strangely absent) are planning.
Bonnie's mom is having a difficult transition, which explains why she and Blondie were absent last ep. Alaric is recovering - well, seems to be.
Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) have eleven stakes, enough to take out all the Originals. They get the gang together, and make a plan to isolate and gang-attack one of them.
Klaus (Joseph Morgan - Ben Hur (2006) ) and Rebekah ( Clare Holt ) have a plan of their own. They want Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) to reverse their mother's spell. To do this, they drag their suicidal brother Finn back to Mystic Falls. Sage ( Cassidy Freeman ) gives him the will to live again ...
Rebekah has plans of her own. She tortures Damon for betraying her. She does not care about torturing Sage or Stefan, both of whom have hurt her more. Evidently she just cannot take rejection from Damon because she really likes him.
Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) tries to interrogate Alaric. But to bring out the Hunter's dark side, he must expose his own dark side.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) and Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) go on a road trip. They find Jeremy, and get him to summon the ghost of Katherine's sire - Rose ( Lauren Cohan , AKA Bella from Supernatural ). Rose sees how Damon and Elena make a great couple.
Rebekah ( Clare Holt ) is her bitchy self as usual, taking over the school decorating committee. But she mellows when her mother ( Alice Eve ) returns. And her rival Vampire Barbie gets her hybrid BF back again.
The Vamp-mother ( Alice Eve ) has a plan of her own. She turns the last stake into an indestructible weapon. Her plan is to do the same to Alaric, making him a super-vamp.
The Uber-vamp goes to the school, to ambush Rebekah ( Clare Holt ) and Blondie. He gets trapped when the sun rises, but he has a plan.
The Salvatore Brothers settle down at Elena's place. Klaus (Joseph Morgan - Ben Hur (2006) ) wants Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) so he can take her with him when he leaves town. Of course, he does not need all of her - just her blood.
Elijah is back in town, for what its worth. He does not really do much this week.
One of the Originals gets staked. Every vamp in the Salvator bloodline faces uncertain death. Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) has to decide who to go to.
Thanks to the Uber-Vamp's politicking, the Council have locked out the Sheriff and the Mayor. Worse, they have Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ), Rebekah ( Clare Holt ) and Blondie. They also have Elena ( Nina Dobrev ), but they do not know that she is a vamp. Technically she is not, because she has not fed yet. And if she does not feed soon, she will die for good.
Klaus (Joseph Morgan - Ben Hur (2006) ) is back. He wants to free Blondie, so he can trick her into being with him. He also wants his old body back. Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) is powerful enough, but if she uses the Dark Magicks she will be punished by The Spirits.
The show now has a voice-over intro, outlining the story's concepts rather than just So far. As always with this kind of thing it is nasty, clunky exposition.
There is a new vamp-hunter in town. He is an African-American with the cliched look (shaven head, goatee beard) made famous by Ben Sisco ( Star Trek: DS9 ) almost twenty years ago. But he is a tough SOB with magical weapons, so he could pose a problem.
The town holds a memorial service for the Town Council. Nobody knows the truth of why they were blown up - Damon gets the blame, as per usual. That said, when our heroes hold their own memorial service we are reminded of how much suffering Damon has caused. Stefan tries to get Elena weaned on animal blood, but she cannot digest it.
The vamp hunter is still in town, and he is not afraid of tangling with the Sheriff's Deputies. But he does not want to kill Tyler, not yet anyway - he wants a sample of fluid from him instead. Yes, werewolf venom is deadly to normal vamps. That said, Hybrids are immune and Klaus (Joseph Morgan - Ben Hur (2006) ) can cure normal vamps.
Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) and Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) head back to school, in order to blend in. But Rebekah ( Clare Holt ) is back at school, and she has nothing better to do than play mind-games with Elena. She invites them to her Anti-Curfew party.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) takes Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) hunting at a College Frat Party. She chooses Roofie guy as her victim. Is he morally worse than her? She makes a moral choice to take a certain victim, but she still uses an unconscious and unwilling person for her own pleasure. If vampirism is a metaphor for sexual penetration, then what she does is metaphorical rape.
Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) the witch may have a crush on her college professor. This probably will not end well.
The Hunter is on the rampage again. He takes hostages, and tries to lure the town's Vamps into a trap. He knows the vamps are pro-human, but he wants to kill them on general principle.
Creepy Professor Shane takes Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) the ex-Witch out of the scene. He tells her that hypnotism will help get her powers back. But can he really do it?
The ep title is a quote from Psycho. It refers to Elena ( Nina Dobrev ), who is haunted by visions of Connor the hunter she killed. She also hallucinates that she is being harrassed by Katherine. The two illusions are caused by the Curse of the Hunter's Mark. Luckily, Klaus (Joseph Morgan - Ben Hur (2006) ) knows about the curse and takes steps to save Elena. He locks her up for her own good, so Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) and friends try to bust her out. This is stupid in a number of ways, but nobody seems to care.
Luckily, the creepy Professor knows the cure. First, they need a Potential vamp-slayer. Then, they need a vamp he can kill to activate his slayer-status. Now, Klaus has a few Hydrids standing around. Will the good guys sacrifice one of their allies?
Jeremy is a vamp-hunter now. But can he control his urges before he kills his own sister? Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) is under orders from Klaus (Joseph Morgan - Ben Hur (2006) ) to help the Hunter's Mark to grow. He has to start turning humans into vamps so Jeremy can boost his vamp-slaying powers. But the powers are a curse. Alaric was a vamp-slayer, and Jeremy remembers how he went insane.
Blondie hosts the Miss Mystic Falls pageant. Klaus is her date for the event. To keep up appearances, her hybrid BF and his werewolf gal-pal come along too. And Professor Creepy is one of the judges. Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) knows the man is up to no good, with his links to the deceased Preacher and his knowledge of witchcraft and vamp lore.
The brothers flashback to 1942, on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) had accidentally sire-bonded Madeline Zima , and Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) was hanging out with Lexie ( Arielle Kebble ). The answer to the sire-bond may lie in New Orleans ...
The girls have a girls' nite at the Brothers' mansion.
Tyler is having trouble asserting himself as Alpha of the hybrid pack.
The Hybrids' plan to turn on Klaus (Joseph Morgan - Ben Hur (2006) ) is brought to fruition. However, there are a couple of double-crosses.
The Warlock professor helps Jeremy overcome his blood-lust towards Elena ( Nina Dobrev ). He also reveals more of what he knows about the cure for vampirism. Is he telling the truth? And if so - why?
The Reverend's daughter has yet another close encounter with the supernatural. Will she eventually discover what is really going on in Mystic Falls?
Rebekah ( Clare Holt ) is back, and she wants the Cure before Klaus (Joseph Morgan - Ben Hur (2006) ) can get it. She holds Blondie, Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) and Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) hostage. Worse, she compels them to tell the truth … to each other.
Klaus gets Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) to send Jeremy to kill more vamps. Naturally, Klaus takes the easy way.
The Professor's evil plan has come to light. His goal is so evil that even the Original Vamps are shocked by it!
Klaus (Joseph Morgan - Ben Hur (2006) ) sends his vamps after Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) and Jeremy - kill or be killed. Damon tries to protect Jeremy, but Cole has plans of his own. Rebekah ( Clare Holt ) confronts Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) again.
Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) tries to lure Cole into a trap. Easier said than done.
Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) distracts Rebekah ( Clare Holt ) by taking her to the 1980s-themed Prom dance. They are there alone, because the new Mayor (Bonnie's dad) cancelled all public gatherings. The Mayor also tries to take Bonnie's witch-powers, to stop her using dark magicks. Unfortunately, Elena needs Bonnie's help to control Cole (and Klaus).
Blondie and her wolf-boy BF are out of town, it seems.
Creepy Professor Shane takes the heroic band to a remote island off the coast of Nova Scotia. He spins them a story about how he went there to commune with his dead wife's spirit, and she is the one who told him how to raise Silas.
There is someone else on the island with them. The place is full of booby-traps, and someone keeps firing arrows and hatchets at them.
Creepy Professor Shane takes Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) and Gilbert to the mouth of the hidden tomb.
The Hunter, a fellow named Vaughn (who has a strange mock-Irish accent), takes Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) to the tomb too. Vaughn wants to kill Silas, but first he has to raise him.
Rebekah ( Clare Holt ), Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) and Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) phone Klaus (Joseph Morgan - Ben Hur (2006) ) for help. He is the only one who can read Aramaic - and he is surprisingly helpful. That is because he knows something about the cure that the others do not.
There is yet ANOTHER player after the cure, which leads up to a shocking twist!
Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) takes Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) and Jeremy back to Mystic Falls. How they travel so fast is not explained - presumably they must run the entire way. Unfortunately Jeremy is a supernatural entity now, so the Gilbert ring will probably not work on him.
Silas has healed the Professor, who is looking after Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) the witch again. Since Silas is supposed to raise the dead, can he help them save Jeremy?
Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) is sent back to High School. She joins the cheerleader squad, and looks great in the uniform.
Unfortunately, when Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) shut off Elena's emotions he also ended the sire bond. Thus, Elena is every bit as dangerous as Katherine.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) takes Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) on a road trip to NYC. Rebekah ( Clare Holt ) gatecrashes. He regales them of the cautionary tale of what he did there in the 1970s, when Lexi ( Ariel Kebble ) tried to cure him of his antisocial ways.
Back in Mystic Falls, Silas gets Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) to summon a dozen witches. Yes, she plays along - knowing he will sacrifice them!
Rebekah ( Clare Holt ) and Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) close in on Katherine. But the wiley doppelganger has a handful of tricks, including a compelled population and a stack of vervane. Can she be trusted?
The Salvatore Brothers close in on the wayward women. But does Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) really want to cure Elena?
Silas is torturing Klaus (Joseph Morgan - Ben Hur (2006) ) for not serving his will. Can Blondie save him? Will she bother?
Elijah has the cure. He denies Klaus (Joseph Morgan - Ben Hur (2006) ) his demands, and gives Rebekah ( Clare Holt ) a chance. If she can live the next day without using her vamp powers, and if she still wants the cure after that, then he will let her have it. Can she convince Matt to like her on her own merits, without compulsion?
It is the night of the School Prom, and finally Rebekah gets to attend it. She kept missing it in previous years, usually getting staked. But despite Blondie's best efforts in organising it, even the humans think it is a boring party. Yet another disappointment for Rebekah.
Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) is a psycho-vamp, willing to kill anyone who gets in her way. This includes her best friend Bonnie ( Kat Graham ), who happens to be a witch (and much more powerful than Elena!). Which begs the question: to restore Elena's humanity, why not make Bonnie or one of the surviving Originals (Klaus, Rebekah, Elijah) to compel her?
Silas can change his appearance to look like anyone. And he takes advantage of this to mess with everyone's head. Judging from the ease with which he did this to Klaus, he must easily be the most powerful vamp so far.
Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) gets detoxed by the Salvatore Brothers.
Klaus (Joseph Morgan - Ben Hur (2006) ) follows the tip-off that Katherine gave him. He heads to New Orleans, where his former protégé Marcel is now king of the Vamps. Klaus gets an incentive to stay, so he and Elijah will get their own spin-off series - The originals .
Before Klaus went to Mystic Falls, he had an entourage of witches and ghouls to do his bidding. Now, despite having the remnants of his Hybrid army, he has to do all his own dirty work.
Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) is still lacking her humanity. Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) do everything in their power to convince her to switch it back on. Luckily, Katherine and Rebekah ( Clare Holt ) are still in town for some reason. Perhaps they can help for a change.
Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) is immune to Silas' powers of manipulation, She hides out, plotting against him. Naturally, he targets her best buddy Caroline ( Candice Accola ) with a terrifying campaign of intimidation. Yes, he makes Klaus (Joseph Morgan - Ben Hur (2006) ) seem like an amateur in comparison.
Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) decides to focus all her emotion on rage, and directs it against Katherine. Yes, the Season One villain's mis-deeds might come back to haunt her. Unfortunately, Katherine still has Silas' tombstone so Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) needs to make a deal with her.
Bonnie's plan is to temporarily lower the veil, only within the Expression Triangle, long enough to contact Kezia and find out how to kill Silas. But will Silas make it that easy?
Some good ghosts come back, to help our heroes. But there are some malicious ones too. This is more than a little reminiscent of Vampire Diaries [Season 3, Episode 7] Ghost World .
Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) has yet to put the Veil up again. The place is still crawling with the undead, for the next few hours. Alaric and Jeremy are still around, but so are some villains. What is almost as bad is the fact that Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) is now an asshole - because of Lexi's presence, not in spite of it!
Rebekah ( Clare Holt ) and Matt the Quarterpounder are held hostage by the Hunters. Connor's camper van, complete with weapons stash, is parked nearby. His explosives and werewolf venom are still there, and his new team are keen to put it to good use.
Col has united the dozens of hybrids and witches sacrificed to create the expression triangle. Led by head witch Cynthia Addai-Robinson they plan on ruining the graduation ceremony.
Katherine is a bitch, and she is coming after Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) for revenge.
We also get a few answers. Who gets to take the cure for vampirism?
Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) and Caroline ( Candice Accola ) start their first day at College. Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) does not turn up, so they get a new room-mate named Meagan. The girls start to get suspicious of her, and events take a turn for the worse.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) is at home, making sure Jeremy attends school. Unfortunately, the school bullies are stupid enough to start something. He can still see ghosts, so he knows whatever Bonnie says. And he has his Hunter powers, so he can tell who Silas is.
Silas is back, using his true face. He wants to expand his powers to their limits, and he needs to get Katherine.
Matt and Rebekah ( Clare Holt ) say their goodbyes, before she heads off to New Orleans and regular cast membership of The originals . They got their jewelry stolen by a Gypsy girl after a three-way in Central Europe. But the Gypsy girl has her own agenda ...
Katherine is on the run from Silas. He has compelled the entire town to search for her, but she has turned being a bitch into a superpower. Matt and Jeremy try to save her from herself.
Silas compels Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) to kill Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ). She is enraged by the tiny minutiae of his everyday life, so is it any wonder he lies to her by omitting details she may worry about?
Matt discovers what happened to Bonnie ( Kat Graham ). Of course, he will not remember this when he wakes up. But Jeremy is still keeping her secret.
The Gypsies are hunting Silas. Yes, yet another mysterious group of Hunters never mentioned in any previous Season. He says they now prefer to be Travellers, which just confuses the situation. Are they Romany Gypsies or Irish Travellers? This is a great example of the Magic Negro trope, where any ethnic subculture outside the Anglo-centric mainstream is magical.
Someone found and opened the safe before the Sheriff's men got to it. Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) is now wandering around, starving - and without his daylight ring. Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) and Katherine both have the same dream about him being in danger. Since Elena has dropped out of college, there is nothing to stop her joining Katherine and Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) on a road trip to find Stefan.
Quetsiah the teenage super-witch has emerged from her time in seclusion. She gives a lot of exposition about the origin of the doppelgangers. The first stage of her plan is to remove Silas' telepathic abilities. This involves linking him and his doppelganger, then frying his brain.
Silas has a female vampire bounty-hunter working for him. Well, she has vampire super-speed but she is a Traveller. Quetsiah's exposition includes the fact that she and Silas lived in Ancient Greece, where they were members of a secret society called The Travellers. So they are not Romany Gypsies or Irish Travellers.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) tries to help Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) get his memories back by going on a joyride. The car flips over a dozen times, like something out of a James Bond film.
Caroline ( Candice Accola ) is still clinging on to her relationship with Tyler, even though he pretty much dumped her in the last phone call. However, she has also recruited a new study buddy - Jesse, the lab assistant to the creepy Professor. Yes, after creepy Professor Shane's fate in the previous season, there is now a NEW one to replace him.
Matt is still having blackouts. He watches his digital CCTV, and discovers an uncomfortable truth.
Stefan chooses Caroline as his sober sponsor - the new Lexi.
Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) is back at college. She goes back to her Nancy Drew subplot, investigating the vamp-related death of her roommate. Megan had a friend from the same hometown, so Elena adds him to the list of suspects.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) wants to make a deal with Silas to bring Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) back from the dead. Jeremy is on-board with it, but Bonnie knows that all magic comes at a price, dearie! Silas needs the doppelgangers killed, and he will drain every drop of Katherine's blood to get the cure.
There is a costume party at the College. Tyler goes with Caroline ( Candice Accola ), but he is still obsessed with getting even with Klaus (Joseph Morgan - Ben Hur (2006) ). He wants to head to New Orleans and guest-star in The originals . Quetsiah goes, and tries to seduce Stefan. Damon and Silas go as well, to get Quetsiah's McGuffin before she does.
Katherine is free to start life again. She has split from Nadia for some reason, so she crashes at Elena's unused dorm bed. Caroline ( Candice Accola ) and her investigate the Creepy Professor and the Secret Society. This seems reminiscent of The Initiative in Buffy: Season 4 .
Silas, Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) and Jeremy drive to New Jersey to find the McGuffin. Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) will do anything to keep Jeremy and Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) safe - a positive version of Quetsiah's obsession with Silas and Amara.
Quetsiah takes Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) and Elena hostage. If Damon does not kill Silas, the witch will kill Elena.
Since the heroes left Silas for dead in New Jersey, he is now taking the bus back to Mystic falls. This is the first time anyone has actually taken TIME to make a journey. He has decided not to bother helping Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) or Bonnie ( Kat Graham ). Our heroes try to make a deal with Quetsiah instead.
Nina Dobrev shows off her talents by playing THREE doppelgangers with distinct personality traits, all in the same episode. Amara is locked in the basement cell. Katherine is aging, and will be dead within a few months. Thanks to the Cure, she cannot ingest vamp blood. Nadia catches up with her, so she might have something to live for.
Silas and Amara both have the cure for vampirism in their bloodstream. Will anyone think of saving some of it?
The main plot of the Season so far is over, but it was just a hold-over from the previous Season. There are a few after-effects, but now the show can move on to the Season's proper College-based plot.
Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) is in College, with Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) and Caroline ( Candice Accola ). Unfortunately as the portal to the afterlife, Bonnie has to experience the death of every supernatural person in the world. One at a time, not all at once, but it still hurts.
Katherine is now propping up a bar in Mystic Falls. She helps Matt discover the truth behind the Travellers' spirit possession spell he is victim to. She also tries to help Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) overcome his PTSD (induced by flashbacks to the months he spent at the bottom of the quarry).
Jesse's vampirism asserts itself, and he takes a bite out of the Creepy Professor and the Suspicious Room-mate. Elena calls Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) in to help with the interrogation.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) is trapped in the vamp-proof cell he spent most of the 1950s in. He is soon joined by Elena ( Nina Dobrev ), so he tells her what happened when he originally encountered the Vamp-hunting scientists. Worse, he tells her of the sadistic revenge he has taken on generations of the Whitmore family in the last fifty years. At least he made a new friend back then - an English-accented vamp mysteriously named Enzo.
Katherine has bottomed out. Can Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) give her a reason to live again?
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) escapes from the escape-proof cell. He gets Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ), and they play good-cop bad-cop (or bad-vamp, crazy-vamp) with Aaron Whitmore. Poor Aaron is the only pawn they can use to get Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) back.
Creepy Doctor Wes has Elena, and he is harvesting her blood so he can use it to cure cancer. Not necessarily a bad thing, especially when you consider that Elena and Blondie bled 2.7 litres of blood from Wes just so they could drain his vervain, then compel him. Also, it was Grayson Gilbert (Elena's foster-father) who taught Wes everything. This should not be a surprise - the Gilberts were a long line of vamp-hunters. John Gilbert (David Anders - Alias ) always got called a really douchey guy, and he was Elena's birth-father: would his brother be that much different?
Wes also has another secret weapon. The Augustine Vampire, the one who killed the girl in Episode One of this Season, is still in his control. This leads to soul-searching by Damon.
Katherine has a reason to live again, thanks to Stefan, but her body is dying. She hires Matt as her personal trainer, to keep her healthy. Nadia tries to convince Katherine to use Traveller magic to cheat death.
Katherine's body is giving out. Five centuries of vampirism means that her now-human body has begun to age. Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) plays sadistic mind-games with her, because he blames her for his own mis-deeds. The others have a drinking game to reminisce on all her misdeeds.
Nadia kidnaps Matt, locks him in the safe, and buries it somewhere. If they do not return Katherine's body, Matt will suffocate. Unfortunately, Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) has hidden the body and will not return it. The others must split up to look for it.
Caroline ( Candice Accola ) has an unexpected encounter in the woods.
Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) has apparently taken a time-out, not answering her phone. Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) leaves stacks of voicemails and texts for her, while he is doing his soul-searching. However, when she reappears, nobody notices how she is acting bitchy and out-of-character.
Enzo is back in town. He still wants revenge on the Whitmore family, several generations after one of them conducted scientific experiments on him. Will he succeed in pulling Damon into his revenge plans?
Nadia is still compelling Matt for info. She does it in public, while he is tending bar at his day-job. This is bound to fail - especially with Tyler the Hybrid hanging around.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) and Enzo are still on a rampage, doing whatever it takes to whoever it takes to get Dr Wes. However, the Travellers are still in town as well. They are willing to protect Wes from their mutual enemies. But what will their price be? And what is their end-game?
Nadia is dying of a wolf-hybrid bite. Katherine ( Nina Dobrev ) is desperate, so she goes to Dr Wes for help. He has dispensed with Enzo and the Travellers, which shows how overconfident he can be.
Will Katherine finally stop running?
Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) wakes up, free of her unwanted passenger. However, she is magically locked in the Whitmore College. Everyone has left for Spring Break. Also, with the head of security, the medical professor and the major financial donor all dead at Damon's hands, it will be a hell of a job getting the place running again. Luckily Elena does not know that yet - but she will eventually recover her memories, or someone will tell her before Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) explains it all to her.
Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) has a new friend-cum-protégé - a newbie witch-girl from the same college class. Well, Willow and Tara met up in Buffy: Season 4 so this does not seem like too much of a stretch. But this might be too good to be true.
The Travellers are still around, so they are evidently not the coven of dead Russian witches Bonnie referred to. They still have two things from Dr Wes - they got what they wanted from him, so they stopped protecting him. They have Enzo . and they snagged a cure to the new anti-vamp virus. Yes, Wes was true to his word about curing werewolf venom.
Elena and Damon will do whatever it takes to break out so they can get to each other. Their friends are trusting fools, despite knowing what they are mentally and physically capable of. Will they kill each other, or will Enzo get them the cure in time?
Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) enjoyed the night together. But now she tries to hit him with a guilt trip. Since he never felt guilty about all the murders, why would a one-nighter with a recent ex be a big deal for him? However, he is still the listed contact for Jeremy's PTA meeting, so Elena must accompany him to the school.
Enzo and Caroline ( Candice Accola ) go to Atlanta in search of the Doppelganger. He is a paramedic, he saves lives for a living - not the kind of person that well-intentioned vamps should kill for no reason.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) and Enzo go looking for the Travellers' leader. He has returned from the dead, and seems to know what is going on.
Enzo has received what the Travellers promised him - info on what happened to his beloved Maggie. She was born in the 1930s so she would be in her 70s at best. However, it turns out she was killed under violent circumstances. Enzo blames Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ), because the killing matches his Ripper MO. However, he forgets one important thing. Maggie was a vamp-hunter, and Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) was on the loose at the time.
The decapitation scene is incredibly graphic, it makes you wonder how something like that can be shown on TV. Highlander would have been incredible if they could have done that every week!
Tyler tries to escape. Can Matt and Jeremy help him? After all, he is their only chance of taking the initiative away from the Travellers and taking the offensive against them.
The Travellers want to drain the doppelgangers of blood. Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) takes Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) and Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) to a remote Cabin in the Woods . After all, nothing could possibly go wrong there - right? They take Caroline ( Candice Accola ) and Luke (the man-witch) for protection. But Enzo's ghost tags along too. He is out for revenge, and with the veil weakening he has the power to physically touch things!
Markos drains the doppelgangers. They manage to get free, but end up hunting squirrels to get fresh blood. To hitch a lift, Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) starts to act like Katherine.
The witches are all out of plans, so they decide to take the easy way out and kill the doppelgangers.
The travellers put their plans into action. Their chanting, combined with the doppelgangers' blood, starts to end all witch magic in Mystic falls. This means that the Bennett witches' daylight rings no longer work. However, this should not matter to the vamps as much as The fact that Vampirism itself is a curse created by the Original Witch means that the walking dead will soon no longer be walking.
Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) tries to help Enzo get back to the land of the living. However, things look bleak for him. They look equally bleak for Bonnie, because even though the Supernaturals flee the town the Travellers' spell will continue to spread until ALL witch magic in the world is undone.
The Travellers have created a zone centred around Mystic Falls where there is no spirit magic. As a result, any Vamps who cross the boundary will die and cross over. Since half the cast has crossed over already, they will need to rely on Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) and the Witches passing them back over into the real world.
The teenagers are all back at Whitmore college. The surviving Salvatore brother has left town, and is now working as a blue-collar mechanic in some other small town. A predatory vamp is stalking the woods around Mystic Falls.
Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) does not seem to be grieving from losing her boyfriend. It turns out a witch has been giving her some special magic herbs that help her hallucinate that Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) is still there, talking to her. Unfortunately, there are a couple of side effects. Addiction is not the main problem, considering that she is a vamp and is thus already addicted to drinking human blood. No, the real problem is that she gets the munchies – which is a serious problem, considering the fact that she is a vamp and is thus already addicted to drinking human blood.
Since the curse is still in effect on the town, and no vamps or magical creatures can exist within the town limits, Elena’s brother has gone from vamp-hunter to mere slacker. Matt, the former quarter-pounder on the High School football team, has joined the local vigilante crew. Why the young men are training as vampire slayers when for the first time in two centuries there are no vamps nearby is a mystery. But Trip (Colin Ferguson, who seemed so nice in Eureka but showed another side to himself in Haven ), has arrived from nowhere and started training the team. Well, in a world where all young women go to college and all young men drop out, someone has to keep them busy somehow.
Blondie goes looking for Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ). En route she picks up Enzo, who was uninterested in Damon’s fate in the Season finale. Now he appears to have had a change of heart, trading sexual favours with witches in exchange for dead-end leads on the afterlife.
Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) gets Ric to compel her to forget her love for Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ). It means trawling her memories for the moment she fell in love with him. The result is that she will see him as a monster, undoing five Seasons worth of character development.
A young woman who got vamp-attacked in the previous ep is hanging out with Jeremy the ex-Hunter. It turns out that she may have a secret and mysterious past of her own, because Trip (Colin Ferguson - Eureka ) asks Matt the quarter-pounder to keep an eye on her. Of course, Trip is not exactly trustworthy himself. He is a descendant of a founding family, and may be a Whitmore alum too.
Damon and Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) are trapped together in a Hell Dimension. Well, it does not look like Hell – more like Mystic Falls in 1995. They are the only people there, trapped together and slowly driving each other crazy. Bonnie tries to learn magic from her granny’s old Grimoire, while Damon practises cooking breakfast. They relive the same day, with nothing intact except their memories. Other than that it is quite reminiscent of The Langoliers .
Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) has gotten over losing Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ), if only by cheating and entering supernaturally-induced amnesia. Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) returns home, but she is not interested in him either. But then, he is pre-occupied with looking for Enzo.
Enzo is still a murderous scumbag, which draws unwanted attention from Trip (Colin Ferguson – Eureka ) and his gang of shotgun-wielding vamp-hunters. Luckily, Stefan’s only interest is in getting revenge on Enzo for murdering his GF.
Elena and the gang go to the swimming hole. She looks amazing in her new swimsuit, which is probably to show that she no longer needs Damon.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) and Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) are trapped in Eclipse Day with an annoying loser, Kai the Warlock (Chris Wood - Supergirl: Season 2 ). He blackmails Damon into telling them the reason that he hates being reminded of that day. In the extended flashbacks, we discover the reason that the Founding Families re-started their conspiracy, and the origins of a certain orphan girl.
Back at Mystic Falls, everyone is looking for the missing girl. Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) and Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) realise that she has not left town, and as vamps they cannot enter the town. Instead they head off to Savannah, Georgia, to start their new lives.
The quarter-pounder ingratiates himself with Trip (Colin Ferguson – Eureka ).
The Whitmore college holds its annual party, on the theme of a murder that happened 150 years previously. A Civil War veteran killed his brother in cold blood (more like hot-blooded rage, since the brother was in bed with the killer’s wife at the time).
As with all social events in the area, it turns into a bloodbath. Ironically, this time it is only indirectly related to the supernatural. Luckily, there are a couple of medical types on the scene. Alaric’s new love interest ( Jodi Lynn O’Keefe ) and Elena’s new squeeze. Unfortunately, neither medical love interest knows that vamps are real!
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) is back, but Elena’s memories are still gone. Yes, a convenient way to get over the fact that the two cast members had a real-life breakup, and a way to turn the storyline back to the early Seasons. Luckily, Ric can turn it back. But what will Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) choose?
Enzo is still a captive, threatening to tell Trip (Colin Ferguson – Eureka ) everything. Unfortunately, Trip has caught other vamps too. He is smart enough to backtrack ...
Elena investigates Ric’s new love interest ( Jodi Lynn O’Keefe ). How can she be immune to compulsion?
The ep comes to a climax on the magical border of Mystic Falls.
Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) is trapped with the crazy murderous Warlock, Kai (Chris Wood - Supergirl: Season 2 ). He takes her to Portland, Oregon, and not for a crossover with Grimm . There is something he needs from his family home.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ), Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) and Ric take a road-trip to Portland in the real world, but the house is under an invisibility spell. Damon has a nasty run-in with the Warlock’s father.
Caroline ( Candice Accola ) hosts a Thanksgiving party in a big house. It looks like Stefan’s house, but he is not invited because he rebuffed her advances. And isn’t his house within the town limits? And would Damon really get invited? Anyhow, it turns into a family reunion for the witches.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) gets Ric to steal the magic artefact from his GF ( Jodi Lynn O’Keefe ). The plan is for Damon and Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) to visit the prison dimension, grab Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) and return to reality again. Unfortunately, they do not factor in for the fact that the villain left Bonnie in Portland.
Meanwhile, the psycho warlock Kai (Chris Wood - Supergirl: Season 2 ) is out and en route to Mystic Falls.
Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) has to deal with the girl who claims to be a Salvatore relative. He also has to avoid Enzo, who is a psycho. Yes, although he handed Enzo over to Trip (Colin Ferguson – Eureka ) for execution a few weeks ago, Stefan has forgotten how much he wanted to kill the psycho.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) and Ric team up as monster-slayers again. Can they kill Kai the Warlock (Chris Wood - Supergirl: Season 2 ) before he kills his own sister? Or will there be a plausible reason for him to continue living until the climax of the Season? And the same goes for Enzo, who is targeted by the local vamp-hunters.
The Warlock can absorb magical energy from people and things. This is a useful superpower to have in a place like Mystic Falls.
Kai the Warlock (Chris Wood - Supergirl: Season 2 ) takes Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) hostage and starts testing his sadistic magic spells on her. He has absorbed too much power, and has to burn it off. Naturally, his powers are so out of control that he would quickly kill a human, so it makes sense he would use a vamp as his test-subject instead.
The sheriff is suddenly (as of last episode) dying of cancer. Blondie and Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) go on a road trip to find a cure.
Blondie discovers that Vamp blood does not really cure cancer, as she had hoped. No, it BOOSTS the cancer! The result is a vampire with out-of-control tumours. How nobody has ever noticed this in all the centuries of vampirism is not mentioned.
Kai the Warlock (Chris Wood - Supergirl: Season 2 ) is under lock and key. His father, leader of the Gemini Coven, comes to town. There are now two sets of twins - which pair will meld, and who will the victor be?
Kai the Warlock (Chris Wood - Supergirl: Season 2 ) suffers the fruits of his phyrric victory - he has inherited his victim’s conscience. To atone for his sins, he lets himself get talked into trying to bring Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) back. He is not powerful enough to open a portal for her, but he can send someone through just long enough to make contact. If they can get Bonnie to remember Quetzia’s magical blood on the first vamp’s tomb in Nova Scotia then she will be able to save herself.
Elsewhere, Enzo forces the quarterpounder to interact with the last living Salvatore. As always, Enzo has a cunning plan to mess with the brothers’ lives.
The witchy subplot seems to have ended, although Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) is still not back. The witches have all died or left town, so it is just the regular characters.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) is expected to read the eulogy of his friend. He remembers how he chickened out of eulogising his own mother, and has never forgiven himself.
Ric’s GF ( Jodi Lynn O’Keefe ) is suffering from unexpected sickness in the morning. It seems she may be linked to her brother Kai (Chris Wood - Supergirl: Season 2 ), the formerly murderous Warlock. He is coming down with magic withdrawal symptoms, and he needs her magic in order to survive. If he dies, the Coven will all die and the Prison Worlds (plural!) will collapse!
In the prison world, Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) prepares to make her escape. But she discovers that the wall with the other prison world is collapsing. Now, what are the chances that the Gemini Coven (based in Portland, Oregon) imprisoned someone from Mystic Falls in the other world?
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) researches the background of the other prison-world inmate. He enlists the help of guilt-ridden Kai the Warlock (Chris Wood - Supergirl: Season 2 ), who still has a few demands. He wants to apologise to Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) in person, as if that will make her forgive him for all the physical and psychological tortures he subjected her to.
Caroline ( Candice Accola ) has switched her humanity off. She tries to dissuade her friends from turning her back, while Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) and Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) try to do exactly that.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) gets Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) to take him to rescue his mother. Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) and Kai the Warlock (Chris Wood - Supergirl: Season 2 ) tag along for company. They discover that while Mrs Salvatore was on her rampage, she was not alone. She wants to bring her friends (a gang of mummified-looking Victorian Rippers) back home with her.
Bonnie has an alternate motive for helping Damon. However, she forgets a couple of things. Firstly, when Kai dies the prison world will collapse ... Secondly, when you cut someone open and leave them near a pile of starving vampires …
Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) is now in his Ripper mode, and starts to mess with Caroline ( Candice Accola ). She lacks a conscience, but she is too anal retentive to actually let loose. Instead she wants to go about her daily chores, without doing anything that might normally make her feel guilty. Stefan regards this as a waste of her potential, and he tries to show her this.
Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) and Caroline ( Candice Accola ) go on a murderous rampage on Whitmore College. So much for the ruling council’s anti-vampire preparations. Presumably when the creepy professor got killed they lost the only one who was actually ready to defend the campus or even himself.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) takes his mother to catch Stefan and give him his humanity back. But she demands a price – the magic artefact that can free her friends. However, Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) would rather die than give it up.
Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) tracks down Caroline ( Candice Accola ). Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) provides backup, Alaric and his fiancé ( Jodi Lynn O’Keefe ) stand guard, and Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) tries to turn Caroline’s humanity switch back on.
Enzo confronts Momma Salvatore about her abandoning him the way she abandoned her offspring. She tells him about her imprisonment, something he can relate to. What are the chances that they would both be imprisoned for decades by completely independent groups of Vamp-hunters that were both linked to Mystic Falls?
Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) wants to steal the magic artefact back. But Momma Salvatore finds the cure, and threatens to destroy it. Will Damon save the cure for Elena? After all, he did not bother to give it to her yet.
Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) hold a Bachelor Party for Alaric. Damon is still mulling over the idea of taking the cure with Elena ( Nina Dobrev ), while Stefan is distracted by his mother’s insanity. Enzo, recently an arch-enemy, attends the party and acts as mediator between the brothers.
Elena and Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) conduct a Hen Party for Alaric’s fiancé. However, they all have other things on their minds. Elena has her unfinished business with Damon, while Bonnie and the fiancé must stop Mrs Salvatore from freeing Kai the Warlock (Chris Wood - Supergirl: Season 2 ) and his murderous acquaintances.
It is the day of Alaric’s wedding. Luckily, Caroline ( Candice Accola ) is back – the old, pedantic Caroline. This is a good thing, she is an obsessive-compulsive with vampire superpowers. Just what they need, because the Wedding Planner mysteriously phones in sick. She says it is the flu, but there is not a lot of it going around. This reviewer suspects that Caroline mesmerised the Wedding Planner into making the call. But whatever the reason, the girls are now back together again.
Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) takes Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) on a road trip to suburbia. Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) wants him to talk Damon out of the idea of becoming human again. After all, Damon without superpowers would just be annoying.
Mrs Salvatore is meant to be locked up in the basement cell, slowly starving. But as a recurring villain she is bound to play a larger role in the Season climax. As is the other imprisoned supervillain, currently stuck in the hell dimension.
Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) is in a coma, as a result of Kai the Warlock (Chris Wood - Supergirl: Season 2 ) magically cursing her. Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) wastes time trying to feed her vamp blood, instead of trying to heal Alaric’s bride-to-be.
Kai left Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) alive as her punishment. As long as she lives, Elena will be in the coma. Will Damon kill Bonnie himself, or stand by and let Kai do it?
Mrs Salvatore and Enzo go looking for her friends, the Witch-Vamp Heretics.
To distract himself from Elena’s fate, Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) has appointed himself Alaric’s grief counsellor.
Mama Salvatore’s crazy friends are hanging out, keeping a low profile. Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) and Caroline ( Candice Accola ) decide to blow them up anyway, taking out all their problems in one blast. Unfortunately, if it was that easy the Gemini Coven would have done it a century ago instead of making an elaborate plan involving a prison world. Later on, the local Sheriff’s Department conducts a public ceremony where they induct Matt and all the other new recruits. A pity the local cops did not spend more time trying to prevent the locals from driving while stoned, or they could have gained one ally among the Heretics.
Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) and Damon return home, but they are less than happy to see the humiliating truce that Stefan has been forced to agree to. In a previous Season, magical beings were exiled from Mystic Falls while the mundane humans could remain. Now it is the other way around.
In a flash-forward to the future, Stefan and Damon are on the run from an unidentified female hunter.
Mystic Falls has been abandoned. However, a couple of college students go exploring and create their own Blair Witch Project found footage film. Matt the quarterpounder (now the last man standing in the sheriff's department) tries to save them, and the Heretics let him live for an unspecfied reason. This actually turns out to be important to the plot.
Damon's impulsive plan has the same predictably disasterous results that Stefan's had. First, Caroline ( Candice Accola ) is taken as a hostage against Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ). The Heretics are a bunch of Mean Girls, far nastier than she ever was. Worse, they then take Elena's body as leverage against Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ).
Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) is back at college, and she has to deal with a few magical emergencies. Firstly, she tries to convince Alaric not to use the magical stone of ultimate evil to raise his dead girlfriend ( Jodi Lynn O'Keefe ) from the grave – well, the freezer. Secondly, she has to help Matt to magically fake his death to undo a Heretic spell. Will something go predictably wrong, in order to increase tension?
The flash-forward shows Caroline as having a marriage and career, but we do not know who her spouse is yet. Also, she is targeted by a mysterious hunter ...
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) takes Alaric and Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) on a road trip in search of the missing Heretic. Mama Salvatore has sent him off on a secret mission. Damon and the target previously met prior to Gettysburg, when Damon was a human serving in the Army of the Confederacy. This may be unusual, because the Heretic is an Asian-American, but one of the Tomb Vamps in the early seasons was Kelly Hu , so presumably wealthy Asian-American vampires were commonplace in the Confederacy.
Caroline ( Candice Accola ) gets the low-down on Stefan's relationship with one of the female Heretics. The girl was his first love, back when they were both human. Unfortunately she was being chaperoned by Julian (Todd Lasance – Spartacus: War of the Damned ). Luckily for Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) she did not have the frigidity associated with Victorian era girls, and was more than happy to get pregnant on their first date.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) gets Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) and Alaric to bring the dead Heretic back to life. If it works on him, they will use it on Jodi Lynn O'Keefe . However, like the other Heretics the dead one was a Ripper. If they bring him back he will need to feed, and be unable to stop.
Oscar the returned-from-the-dead Heretic has amnesia. The rebel Heretic girl takes advantage of this opportunity, and joins the Salvatore brothers in their quest for the body of Julian (Todd Lasance – Spartacus: War of the Damned ). Will they find where Oscar stashed him before Mama Salvatore gets there?
Alaric’s wife ( Jodi Lynn O'Keefe ) also has amnesia. Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) realises something may be wrong, so she visits Oscar to question him about the magic stone. Enzo is babysitting him while Mama Salvatore is away, and in the flash-forward it turns out that Bonnie and Enzo have a future connection.
Mama Salvatore hosts a party to celebrate the fact that her lover Julian (Todd Lasance – Spartacus: War of the Damned ) is back from the dead, and is now merely Undead again. Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) are invited, and they both turn up for their own reasons. Stefan wants to kill Julian ASAP, but Damon wants to take his time and do it in six months time - to make his mother suffer even more from her loss.
Stefan (Paul Wesley - Wolf Lake ) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) kidnap Mama Salvatore. Their plan is to convince her that Julian (Todd Lasance – Spartacus: War of the Damned ) is a villain, and that she has terrible taste in men. After all, her husband was abusive to the boys - even if he no longer looks like James Remar in the flashbacks.
Enzo uses Bonnie's help to discover the magical item that Julian wanted. It turns out to be a sword, so Enzo plans to kill Julian with it in a duel. Unfortunately Julian is a centuries-old vampire with great skill. He may even be the original Julius Caesar, if this is assumed to be the same character Todd Lasance played in Spartacus: War of the Damned .
Caroline ( Candice Accola ) may be an undead incubator for Alaric's twins. Worse, she and Matt the quarter-pounder have to deal with a town full of human hostages being kept in trances. Julian has a secret agenda, and needs a lot of human slaves for it.
In the future, Damon has a plan to rescue Caroline. It is the same old fast-and-dumb attack plan that would have failed against Connor, four Seasons ago. Has Damon actually forgotten everything he has learned from bitter experience?
Mama Salvatore holds a party for the anniversary of the Lesbian Vampire couple. Julian (Todd Lasance – Spartacus: War of the Damned ) has all his kidnapped humans in attendance, as blood-bags for the party. This may be all he had in mind for them, because the magic gem and sword are not mentioned this episode.
The lesbian couple have split up after the events of the previous episode. The blonde one is a fan of Julian (Todd Lasance – Spartacus: War of the Damned ), so she spends a lot of time drinking alone. Nora the brunette Heretic volunteers to help out at the hospital, and tries to bond with Bonnie ( Kat Graham ).
Caroline's pregnancy is beginning to take a toll on her, and Alaric.
The Salvatore Brothers still want payback from Julian. Unfortunately they forget he has a few advantages on them. He is twice as old as either of them, and even though they have taken on The Originals he can still fight them to a standstill. Secondly, he has the magic sword and the Phoenix Stone. And finally, he has the ability to recruit allies. Conversely, Stefan constantly underestimates his enemy and cobbles together the most half-hearted of plans.
For UK viewers the previous episode was the mid-Season finale. But this episode is the TRUE mid-Season finale, because it ends on an incredible cliffhanger.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) is trapped in the Phoenix Stone. It forces him to relive a day he spent during the US Civil War. He and a friend were ordered to arrest some deserters. However, despite cowardice in the face of the enemy these deserters are brave enough to ambush strangers. Worse, young Damon was still a Southern Gentleman when it comes to women, so he is at a severe disadvantage. Luckily this is a Groundhog Day situation, so he gets many attempts to get it right.
The others gather while Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) tries to pull his soul out of the stone. However, Damon is inadvertently resisting. And worse, the stone confuses him so he cannot know it a rescue is real or a fantasy.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) is finally out of the Phoenix Stone, but Stefan insists on keeping a close eye on him. The Stone continues to work its magic on its victims, although strangely Julian (Todd Lasance – Spartacus: War of the Damned ) never seemed to have any problems with it. Damon's PTSD manifests itself as visions of someone from his Phoenix Stone fantasy. Will it be his mother, the person he obsessed about? Or will it be the Confederate soldier he spent a couple of days in a tent with?
Julian has taken over the town, and has a bunch of bikers hanging out in it. Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) and the quarter-pounder secretly murder the bikers whenever they can. However, they must play the friendly game so nobody suspects them. Bonnie befriends one of the Heretics, and discovers that the grown-up Buffy chasing them is called The Huntress.
It turns out that Stefan is not over his own Phoenix-Stone PTSD. Yes, he has his own set of problems. He cannot tell when he is speaking to the real Damon or to a halucination.
Tyler the werewolf comes to town for Caroline's baby shower. She is his ex-girlfriend, of course, although the babies are Alaric's and not his. Since Tyler is the one tasked with hiding Elena, this is not a good thing.
Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) and the lesbian vampires go after the Huntress, Rayna Cruz. Nobody has taken into account the fact that they have not seen her for a hundred years. Yes, she is physically a lot older than they expected. But of course, they manage to underestimate her.
Stefan is looking after his girlfriend Caroline ( Candice Accola ), who is pregnant with twins of their friend Alaric. However, she is a vampire and the twins are a witch's foetuses that were teleported into her. Worse, she now discovers that the twins are magic-suckers that will leech the magic out of her.
The grown-up Buffy called The Huntress is chasing the Heretics. We get a flashback of her origin story. Her father was one of The Five, and she grew up in a tent in the woods in Louisiana before the US Civil War. Her father spent fifteen years training her in sword-fighting, but he was not very good because he got easily defeated by Julian (Todd Lasance – Spartacus: War of the Damned ). To get revenge, the daughter got some Native American shamans to give her superpowers.
Caroline ( Candice Accola ) is in the maternity ward. Unfortunately there are unforseen complications with the Caesarean operation. The babies are magical, and not in a good way. They are sucking the magic out of Caroline's vampire body, and they do not want to leave. Luckily, Stefan gets the surviving Heretics to wean the kids with their witch-vampire powers. Unfortunately, the Huntress is still after the Heretics, and she will kill any other vamps she finds!
Stefan goes on the run to the one place he knows the Huntress cannot find him. It is a bar in New Orleans that is shielded against magic. Of course, Stefan finds an old ally there - Klaus (Joseph Morgan - Ben Hur (2006) )! However, there is no sign of of Rebekah or Elijah.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) and Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) track down Enzo. He has teamed up with some vamp-hunter types called The Armoury. The good news is, they can give a lot of exposition on the Huntress. The bad news is, Enzo has a vicious trick lined up for his former friend Damon.
Caroline ( Candice Accola ) decides to help Alaric look after his babies. This means moving house with him to his new place in Dallas, Texas.
The Huntress comes back to Mystic Falls to pick up Stefan's trail again. Matt the quarter-pounder is still around, and he has a hot new girlfriend to help him kill vamps. He allows her to mess with his head, and convince him to blame Stefan for everything bad that has happened.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) gets his hands on the Huntress, and starts to relieve her of a few of her nine lives. Well, EIGHT lives so to speak. It turns out that The Armoury have been keeping the Shamans who gave her their power. Each time she loses a life, one of them dies. And when the last one dies, she stays dead - but so does anyone marked by her sword.
The strange thing is that Damon keeps telling the Huntress that she looks just like Elena Gilbert. Is this woman meant to be one of the doppelgangers? She has nothing in common with Nina Dobrev except for the fact they are both brunettes. Was this role written with the intention of getting Ms Dobrev back on the TV show? Or worse, is the new actress intended to play Elena instead?
This episode ends with the storylines getting tied together. The Salvatores hop forward three years, and we finally get into the main storyline!
The main storyline is now in the three years later era. The Salvatore Brothers try to negotiate a deal with Rayna the Hunter. She is keen to transfer the magic mark from Stefan to Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ). It turns out that she has been psychicly linked to Stefan for three years, and has realised that he is a decent guy (for a vampire).
The Armoury blame Enzo for setting Rayna loose. They make a deal with the remaining Heretics they have - the Lesbian vampires. Hunt Enzo down, before Rayna finds her prey.
The good news is, Stefan no longer has Rayna's mark. This means Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) can kill her without any side-effects. However, he needs her alive because Stefan's soul and body are seperated.
Stefan's soul is in a human male, so the situation could be worse. However, the man in question is on the run from a redneck sheriff in Dixie-land. Damon must find his now-mortal brother before his fragile new body gets killed.
Stefan's vampire body is possessed by one of the worst vamps in the Phoenix Stone. This one was a serial killer BEFORE he became a vamp, so he does not have the Ripper excuse that Stefan and his mother had.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) closes in on the serial-killer vamp who hijacked Stefan's body. They only have a brief window of opportunity before Stefan's new body dies for good, so they must swop him back ASAP. Unfortunately, the serial-killer wants something in return. Damon must kill Rayna Cruz, before she goes back to her vamp-hunting ways.
Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) is still hiding out in the mental health clinic. She attends a group therapy session where she blames Damon for everything. Of course he has not been to visit her since he was revived, but that is only because he has been on the run constantly.
Alaric also gives Damon short shrift. Everyone seems to have moved on with their lives, and despite their apparent success and happiness they blame the Salvatore Brothers for everything.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) and Enzo take Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) away to a cabin in the woods. This leads on to flashbacks of Bonnie's relationship with Enzo over the previous three years, while Damon was sleeping in his coffin.
Rayna Cruz offers a deal - she will sacrifice her life to save Bonnie's. However, she wants the Salvatores to fill in for her at the vamp-slaying business. To prove that they can handle things without her, she makes a hit-list of vamps she trapped in the phoenix stone. Damon and Enzo go after the ones on the east coast, while Stefan and Alaric take the ones to the west of the Mississippi. The irony is that this gives them a chance to bond and repair their dysfunctional friendships.
The vamp-hunting continues. Alaric is now teamed up with Caroline ( Candice Accola ), so they can work out their relationship issues.
Stefan teams up with Matt the quarter-pounder. Unfortunately Matt still bears him a grudge, which has something to do with the death of his fiance. Is Stefan really the reason she got killed?
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) arranges a deal with the Armoury. Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) is less than pleased about this, but she already hates Damon so he thinks he has nothing to lose. The Armoury insist that Bonnie opens the Vault of Unknown Evil. At least this part of the storyline will get some closure.
Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) has been saved by the life essence of the Slayer. However, she is has chosen to stay in a coma and slowly die rather than accept the Slayer's essence and allow it to possess her. After all, if she becomes a Slayer she will have to kill her best friends.
Caroline ( Candice Accola ) and Enzo take turns entering Bonnie's coma-dream and trying to convince her to wake up. Unfortunately the Slayer curse works even in a coma, so Bonnie ends up marking her loved ones for death. Stefan takes Caroline to safety, and they end up going on the run together. This mirrors Stefan's life on the run with his ex-lover, so it gives Caroline a chance for some closure. Unfortunately she must abandon Alaric and the children, but that is the price of survival.
This episode was directed by Paul Wesley, so Stefan has relatively little to do. It mostly centres around Damon, as he tries to save Bonnie from herself. First he has to persuade her to live, by making her so angry that she chooses to wake up and come after him. Then he must avoid getting killed by her. At least this allows Bonnie a chance at the same closure Caroline has.
The Armoury subplot was concluded in the previous episode. Bonnie magically sealed the building when the evil in the basement escaped. Unfortunately this meant abandoning the greatest collection of magical artefacts in the world. Worse, it meant abandoning the last of the Immortals who is spiritually linked to the Slayer.
The only way to defeat Bonnie is inside the Armoury, which is sealed by Bonnie's spell. Since she is unlikely to open it herself, they need the magic siphoned off by a powerful witch. The only option, since Valerie has conveniently left town, is to compel Alaric and use his twin daughters.
Unfortunately, the evil in the basement is more powerful than any of them expected. And it is the perfect setup for yet another Season of the show.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) and Enzo have spent months as brainwashed servants of the mind-bending monster. It does not simply feed on any old humans, it demands the most evil they can find. However, they have racked up quite a body-count over the summer.
Caroline ( Candice Accola ) is now shacked up with Stefan. Well, she visits him for booty calls but she keeps the kids at her mother's old house. She has shared custody of the children with Ric, although she is strangely worried that he might find happiness with the hot nanny, Seline ( Kristen Gutoskie ). She should be more worried about his hot intern ( Allison Scagliotti ).
Stefan and Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) close in on the missing vamps and their mysterious controller. Luckily, Enzo's favourite book was The Odyssey and he made Bonnie read it with him. This common frame of reference means he is able to give her clues on what the monster is.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) has run out of actual evil-doers to murder, so he goes after a salesman who sells machines that make other machines - which might include parts of guns. Yes, this is setting the bar quite low indeed. In all fairness the man is spending the weekend with someone he is not married to, but even in Texas that does not merit the death penalty.
Sybil the Siren is bored, so she tries to find out what her man-slave Enzo is hiding from her. Then she sends him and Damon out to kill the woman he cares about.
Stefan, Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) and Caroline ( Candice Accola ) discover that someone is killing every woman named Sarah Connor - err, whatever. They go to protect the last one on the list, who is Stefan and Damon's last living relative. Bonnie only cares about getting Enzo back, even if it means exposing him (and herself) to Sybil's wrath.
Ric gets some exposition from his hot intern ( Allison Scagliotti ). Apparently one time she had a near-death experience, and she experienced a mystical realm that the siren came from.
Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) must pay the price for trying to steal Enzo from his owner, Sybil the Siren. Sybil targets her. The good news is, Bonnie is Caroline's maid of honour so the two of them are hanging out for the day. The bad news is, Bonnie is no longer one of the Bennet Witches.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) calls on Stefan for help. Sybil is smart enough to realise when her full-frontal attack goes wrong, so she has set Damon and Enzo against each other.
Ric has to work out how the Armoury originally captured Sybil, although in all fairness even the people running the place for the last century seemed to have absolutely no idea what was inside. Luckily Ric gets some more exposition from his hot intern, Georgie ( Allison Scagliotti ), who is doing pretty much the same job she did in Warehouse 13 . She thinks the strange two-pronged fork is the Devil's pitchfork, even though it looks more like a big tuning fork.
Sybil is safe under lock and key in the Armoury. She is happy to stay in custody, and gives a long-winded version of her own backstory. This not only provides exposition about how she became a siren, it also provides character development and humanises her (no pun intended). She was an outcast from Ancient Greece, and lived on an island with an adopted sister. They are quite different from one another - one is a merciless killer, the other a reluctant accomplice. Not unlike the Salvatore brothers themselves. But which one is Sybil?
The story also begs another question - what happened to the other Siren? Georgie the hot intern ( Allison Scagliotti ) is still poking around, eager to find out what Ric is up to.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) makes it to Texas, where he hunts down Joel Gretsch ( The 4400 ). The guy looks strangely familiar, and not because of his many starring roles in Science Fiction TV shows.
This Season seems to have a high body count among recurring characters. The good news is that the story arc concerns the afterlife, so our heroes might have to defeat the soul-reaping villain and free his victims. Also, we might actually find out what happened to Katherine's soul when she died.
Matt and his friends have a low-key funeral for Tyler. Predictably, Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) gatecrashes it.
Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) cannot make it to the funeral. She is trying to persuade Enzo to flip his humanity switch back on. All she has to do is make him confront his worst fear.
Alaric attends the funeral, even though he did not know Tyler that well. This means he leaves his daughters with the hot nanny, Seline ( Kristen Gutoskie ) ... and he puts his one remaining intern in charge of the Armoury. Even worse, instead of having the wake at the Armoury they have it at a Carnival. What could possibly go wrong?
The two Siren sisters are reunited at last. One of them has kidnapped Alaric's twin daughters, and plans to trade them to Cade as the next generation of reapers. The other Siren wants to trade ... the Salvatore brothers. Well, if Stefan and Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) were ever cut out for anything, an eternity of feeding dark souls into the underworld is exactly that.
Stefan tries to help Enzo, who is being psychically tortured to death by Sybil. Then he followes the clues to her location. Unfortunately, despite having super-human strength and speed he is inexplicably incapable of defeating mere mortal humans in a battle.
Caroline ( Candice Accola ) refuses to talk to Stefan while Damon is being used as a brainwashed tool. Alaric is also angry, and blames Caroline for the girls' abduction. After all, everything bad in Mystic Falls concerns vampires. However, he knows that their genetic mother is Jo and she was a witch from the Gemini Coven on the West Coast. It is the girls' inherent witchiness that attracts trouble to them. Worse, the Gemini curse is that when they come of age one must absorb the other. So to blame the vampires is completely illogical.
Matt is still out for revenge. Typical, since he also teamed up with the Armoury and Rayna Cruz when he had the chance. However, his interference might have terrible consequences. Cade wants his reapers, and if he cannot have Sirens or Salvatores then he might take the Gemini twins anyway.
It turns out that Cade has been watching Stefan since his days as a Ripper, back in Monterey in 1916.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) is back, courtesy of Cade. He attends a get-together of the show's regulars, with Sybil the Siren as his plus-one. Caroline ( Candice Accola ) spots the chance to remind him of Elena. Yes, she is a lot smarter than she looks.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) and Stefan are on Cade's business. They have lowered the standards quite a bit, although the sirens never exactly set a high bar to begin with. Simply valuing one's own life above that of a stranger, which is basically just selfishness, is now punishable by death and eternal damnation. The brothers decide to make it a bit more interesting.
Despite having her heart ripped out, Sybil the Siren ( Nathalie Kelley ) is still in town. She gets Caroline ( Candice Accola ) to help obtain part of a magic bell. Yes, the tuning fork was part of a larger siren-killing super-weapon. Matt's father (Joel Gretsch - The 4400 ) hid part of it twenty years ago, so at least they know where to look.
Seline ( Kristen Gutoskie ) is in town as well. She tries to get Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) and Caroline ( Candice Accola ) on her side. They do not want to work with her, and instead get Matt and his friend in the Arsenal to double-cross her.
Bonnie and Enzo are back from Paris. He has given her a phial of his blood to wear around her neck, just like Billy Bob Thornton did with his then-wife Angelina Jolie . However, Bonnie takes it as an offer to turn her into a vampire. She refuses, because it would be unfair on Elena. In all fairness, it would be a great way around the curse. After all, Bonnie's mother stopped being a witch when she became a vampire so it has already been established that magic treats vamps as non-living creatures. Therefore if Bonnie became a vamp, Elena would wake from her slumber.
Stefan and Damon also have their soap opera private lives to deal with. Stefan is confronted by Caroline, who is less than happy that he has become a ripper again. Worse, he has become a feminist - he chooses his career over their relationship. In comparison, Damon's issues with Elena and Sybil are small potatoes.
Seline ( Kristen Gutoskie ) makes a deal with Matt and his father (Joel Gretsch - The 4400 ). she wants them to use the anti-Siren weapon that will kill her sister. What she does not tell them is the scale of collateral damage.
Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) and Caroline ( Candice Accola ) enter Damon's subconscious to wake him up. Unfortunately he is in his own personal hell ... yet again. Previously his personal hells were to repeatedly relive a day in the 1970s, and then to repeatedly relive a day in the US Civil War. His new hell is contemporary Mystic Falls, peopled by a lot of the people who he killed over the years.
If the storyline seems familiar, that is because the show is female-orientated. The female protagonists must outwit the female antagonists. The male characters are bad-boy types, and to be saved they must redeem themselves.
Cade is on Earth. He offers the Salvatore brothers a deal. Each must kill the other's true love. Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) is sent to kill Caroline ( Candice Accola ), while Stefan goes looking for Elena.
Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) takes Enzo on a romantic getaway to her secret safe-house. Rather than go directly there, they take the scenic route so he can make a bucket list and do a few things on it. This seems a bit ironic, because he is about to become human. Just like in the film On her Majesty's Secret Service ... We have all the time in the world!
Stefan is human again. He runs into trouble with the police for DWB - driving while blood-stained. They try to pin the recent murder spree on him, although they do not seem to have any evidence against him. He feels really guilty about what he did, although Caroline ( Candice Accola ) reassures him that it is all Cade's fault. How very convenient for her to ignore the vast number of murders he committed long before he entered Cade's service.
Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) is heart-broken at Enzo's fate. Much like Caroline, she chooses to ignore her lover's murder sprees. Poor old Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) is the only one who is portrayed as even semi-villainous, but that is a different point. Bonnie's mother drops by to lend motherly support and advice.
The diabolical pact is broken, but Cade gives Damon a new offer. Either he hands over the Maxwell journal by midnight, or Cade will reap Stefan's soul. Alaric has returned to the Armoury, and refuses to let Damon have the journal until they know what Cade wants with it. It is obvious that the journal is a link to the only weapon that can kill Cade. However, nobody thinks of scanning the book into the computer.
Alaric regresses Matt so he can live his ancestor's memories. The original Maxwell was best friends with a Bennett witch in 1790, who must have been the grandmother of Katherine's maid. They had an encounter with the sirens, who had been stashing their mementos in the cave long before the Armoury mansion was built around it.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) teams up with old enemy Kai the Warlock (Chris Wood - Supergirl: Season 2 ), who has partially escaped from Hell. They carry on with Cade's task of killing bad guys, which apparently includes anyone too bald to be allowed a healthy interest in sex.
Caroline helps Sheriff Matt to deal with survivors of Stefan's vampiric attacks. Rather than kill all the witnesses, Stefan would just compell them to forget. Unfortunately, when he lost his vampirism the victims stopped being compelled. Ah well, no good deed goes unpunished.
Stefan himself is held at gunpoint by one of the victims. By incredible coincidence, it is a recurring character who survived an attack seven years ago in Tennessee!
Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) is still angry at Stefan for what he did to Enzo. In all fairness, Enzo is not an innocent bystander. Also, if Bonnie had managed to use the cure on Enzo then he would be the one crippled with guilt instead of Stefan.
Cade gives Damon (Ian Somerhalder - Smallville, Lost ) and Stefan a choice. Hand over the magic dagger, or he will destroy Elena's coffin. Naturally they try a double-cross, although Damon inconveniently forgets that he has super-human speed.
Kai the Warlock (Chris Wood - Supergirl: Season 2 ) gets imprisoned in the Armoury, Of course, his superpower is that he siphons magic ... and the Armoury is full of it. Bonnie would prefer to abandon him in yet another alternate universe, but he has already escaped from two of them.
The gang assume that Katherine is in town, and that she wants revenge. They create a dagger from her bones in order to kill her. Since Katherine loves to gate-crash large social events, they decide to hold a wedding ceremony to draw her out.
Sheriff Matt is distracted because both his parents are in town. His father (Joel Gretsch - The 4400 ) helps make the magic dagger. His mother ( Melinda Clarke ) has not been seen since Season One, and nobody thinks it is suspicious she chooses this precise moment to return. Worse, it turns out that her own son did not bother to keep tabs on her during the many years they were apart.
Bonnie ( Kat Graham ) is jealous of her best friend Caroline, because Stefan killed Enzo. She conveniently forgets all the terrible things Enzo did. Also, everyone forgets the Stefan-Elena-Damon love triangle. At least Alaric has the decency to mention his own first marriage, which illustrates that he has the had the most tragic love life in the entire show.
This is the end, not merely of the half-length Season but of the entire show. Just like Grimm , a similarly themed show about a team of supernatural characters who protect their town from magical creatures. However, the two shows took entirely different approaches to their conclusion.
The main villain of the Season was dealt with a couple of episodes ago. However, to tie up all the loose ends an old villain is resurrected. Yes, the evil mastermind behind everything is ... Katherine Pierce. Finally Nina Dobrev returns to the show - not as the main character but as a villain! To be fair, there are lots of cameos by recurring characters as they all get their chance to say goodbye to the show. The only notable exception is Elena's birth-mother Isobel ( Mia Kirshner ).
The main characters must risk everything, and potentially sacrifice their own lives in order to save the town. However, this is a supernatural show that focuses a lot on the afterlife. It turns out that ghosts are real, and the good people will all meet up in paradise after they die. Among other problems this is all a bit confusing, because the audience cannot determine which scenes are dream sequences or flash-forwards.
On a brighter note, spin-off show The Originals has been taken up by Netflix, so some characters might reappear on that show.
