This was written and directed by Sam Raim and has all his signature camera shots. It has some decapitation scenes straight out of Bad Taste by the other great 1980s indie horror director, Peter Jackson . It is also probably the best thing that Bruce Campbell has done since Bubba Ho-tep .
Ash (Bruce Campbell) is a middle-aged parody of himself, like in My Name Is Bruce . He still lives in a trailer park, although his trailer is much bigger on the inside (like a TARDIS). He is still a stockboy, working with 20-somethings Pablo and Kelly. However, it turns out that he accidentally unleashed the Deadites again.
Nearby, lady cop State Trooper Amanda Fisher ( Jill Marie Jones ) has a violent encounter with the Deadites.
Kelly's mother ( Mimi Rogers ) is not dead after all. She invites Ash (Bruce Campbell - Sunrise: The Vampire In Retreat ) and Pablo to stay for dinner. However, Ash does not believe her story for a moment. He adopts Austin Powers style methods in an attempt to reveal her true form.
Ruby ( Lucy Lawless ) is on Ash's tail. She discovers the crosses on the fresh graves at Kelly's house. Strange, since we later discover that Kelly is meant to be Jewish!
Ash (Bruce Campbell - Sunrise: The Vampire In Retreat ) and his friends get to the bookstore, where the owner claims he can translate the book. Unfortunately State Trooper Amanda Fisher ( Jill Marie Jones ) knows about the place as well.
Ash wants to find a way to reverse the summoning spell. His plan is to summon and interrogate a minor demon. Unfortunately there is no such thing as a minor demon! The only clue he gets is some kind of vague look inside yourself
Ruby ( Lucy Lawless ) is on Ash's tail. She kicks ass like Xena: Warrior Princess , and now she finds what he did to the lady cop.
Ash (Bruce Campbell - Sunrise: The Vampire In Retreat ) and his friends get chased by a smoke-monster. Luckily they get to Pablo's uncle, a Brujo witch-doctor. The witch-doctor takes Ash on an LSD-induced dream quest.
Pablo tries to build Ash a new mechanical hand. State Trooper Amanda Fisher ( Jill Marie Jones ) has the old wooden one, and thinks of getting a list of local amputees. Ruby has Ash's original hand, and intends to track him using magical means.
Kelly is feeling sick. And we get to find out what happened to the not-so-minor demon from the last episode.
Ash (Bruce Campbell - Sunrise: The Vampire In Retreat ) is tied up, to get an exorcism from the witch-doctor. This means that Kelly is left alone with Pablo. What could possibly go wrong?
When the demonic exorcism finally takes place, it is like a series of scenes from The Exorcist .
The show's formula seems clear now, and this episode epitomises it perfectly. It starts with Ruby ( Lucy Lawless ) turning up just after Ash and his friends have fled. Ash's new ally is dead, and the body possessed by a demon, but Kelly sorts out the mess Xena-style.
Ash (Bruce Campbell - Sunrise: The Vampire In Retreat ) and the kids end up at a diner. The plan is to make contact with a friend who is in the local Militia. Ash tries flirting with the waitress, since he cannot afford to pay the twenty-dollar cost of the meal. However, both the Deadites and State Trooper Amanda Fisher ( Jill Marie Jones ) are on their way. Will Ash get some action in the bathroom?
This episode was directed by Michael Hurst ( Almighty Johnsons ).
Ash (Bruce Campbell - Sunrise: The Vampire In Retreat ) and his friends reach the Militia compound. However, the Militia has already been attacked by a Deadite - and now they assume Ash and the US Government is behind it!
Ash gets to spend some time alone with State Trooper Amanda Fisher ( Jill Marie Jones ). Unfortunately this involves them being cuffed together and then dumped into the underground bunker complex that the Deadite is hiding in.
Pablo and Kelly go on the run, pursued by the Militia. It is revealed that Kelly is so unfamiliar with weaponry that she does not know which way round to load the magazine. Poor Pablo must trust in her ability to avoid shooting him by mistake!
This episode was directed by Michael Hurst ( Almighty Johnsons ). This gives one hope that the Lucy Lawless partial nudity scene is authentic, although you do not see her face in the relevant shots so it is probably a body double.
Ash (Bruce Campbell - Sunrise: The Vampire In Retreat ) gets to the Cabin in the Woods He spends some time alone with State Trooper Amanda Fisher ( Jill Marie Jones ). Unfortunately, this is Deadite Central. Ash confronts his girlfriend's head in the shed.
Pablo and Kelly get lost in the woods while looking for the cabin. They bump into some Kiwi teenager tourist back-packers. The show was filmed in New Zealand, but it is surprising they could not find three young actors who could try an American accent. In all fairness, Heather ( Samara Weaving ) is actually an Australian.
Ash's severed hand got to the cabin of its on accord. Now it has re-grown a new Ash - an evil twin. Not unlike the evil twin in Army of Darkness .
The Kiwi tourists are back. Pablo and Kelly try to escort them to safety. Unfortunately there is no road, only a hiking trail through the woods.
Ruby ( Lucy Lawless ) finally confronts Ash (Bruce Campbell - Sunrise: The Vampire In Retreat ). She claims that she can safely destroy the book, and points out that all Ash has done is get people killed. However, we still do not know who she really is or what her agenda is?
Ruby ( Lucy Lawless ) finally reveals her true intentions to Ash (Bruce Campbell - Sunrise: The Vampire In Retreat ). Since he is the one with his name in the title, he is the one who will have to save the day.
Will Ash destroy the Evil Dead for good, ruining the chances of a second Season of this excellent show? Or will he make a deal with the Ruler of Hell? After all, the Winchesters have done that with Crowley in Supernatural , the boom-stick pastiche of the original movie. And Ash is a weak-willed git, which is really part of his charm.
