Charmed [Season 2, Episode 1]
Witch Trial
Shown 13th January 2001 [Saturday]
The girls are back again, and while Doherty has lost her love interest, Piper [ Holly Marie Combs ] has gained one. Ms Combs looks a LOT sexier than she used to [for no apparent reason], and instead of running a restuarant she is now trying to start a nightclub.
Plot-wise, a demon steals the Book of Shadows and sets last season's villains free one by one.
Brian Krause pops up again, and TPTB instruct him to turn the Book of Shadows to the page on time-travel. The girls become their future selves, with Phoebe due to be executed in a matter of hours.
Overwhelmed by the competition for a job at a dot-com [everyone else has a Degree], Phoebe casts a smart spell on herself.
Meanwhile, Prue and Piper try to rescue a man trapped in a painting. They tell him the year is 1999, which tells us when the show was made ...
The sisters' newly-opened bar is attracting little custom. Their Guardian Angel [Brian Krause] helps by getting a RL band [Dogwallah - possibly the band of Milano's husband] to play there.
However, the Band's manager ensures their success by feeding groupies to a demon. Why bother? To hell with the demon and the band, why not just shag the groupies?
There's a heatwave in town, and the 3 sisters are in heat. Phoebe [ Alyssa Milano ] is having visions of seducing and murdering men, and the african-american cop asks Piper to help solve the murders. It turns out the murderer is a succubus, a witch gone bad who drains the testosterone of her victims.
The girls cast a spell to attract the succubus, to check that Phoebe is not the killer. Phoebe is cleared, but Pru [ Shannen Doherty ] is turned into a man. Well, I say man but she's only about 4 feet tall and has a wimpy looking goatee [not to mention a very strange, supposedly masculine voice] so things are relative.
The Guest Star Band at the girls' bar is The Cranberries .
The Charmed Ones come up against a wicked witch with a magic wand.
Phoebe spends her spare time working in a hospital. One of the patients was put into a coma by brain-sucking warlocks, and they are after his twentysomething son.
Meanwhile, Pru and Piper are mistrustful of their own respective love interests. The girls cast a mind-read spell on themselves.
Pru [ Shannen Doherty ] is sitting beside the lake where her mother drowned, when she sees a man murdered by a water-demon that drags him into the lake.
Alyssa Milano brainwashes a mixed-gender group of blue-uniformed cub scouts into staying away fom the lake with the wordsvWater bad, earth good. Unfortunately we never get the obvious pay-off; the children refuse to bathe, shower or go out in the rain.
This episode includes a scene that illustrates perfectly how this show takes three beautiful babes and then makes them look completely unatractive. These are grown women, but when they run [in high heels, in spite of which they STILL look like midgets] they wave their hands around like ...
Cupid gets mugged by a demon [Clayton Rohner - G vs E ], who steals his ring. The demon plans to use it to break up all the relationships that Cupid created between men and women. Hmm - usually the only ring that can do that is a marriage ring!
Cupid goes to the Charmed Ones for help. I know why you can't find love, he tells Phoebe. Well, it's a mystery to me. Especially when the next scene features her in a flimsy t-shirt with no bra on ... [drool ...]! Pru likewise forgoes support in her evening dress while on a night out with the cop guy from Jason vs Freddy.
The sisters look after an abandoned baby, which illustrates their lack of parenting skills. The baby was abandoned because of a ghost that cursed its grandmother, Stephanie Beecham . The moral of the story? True love is evil. Like we didn't know that!
The starting credits of this episode are subtly different from the others in the Season: the shot of Shannen Doherty in her leather bra-thing is missing. This also explains why Holly Marie Combs looks sexier in some episodes than in others: that damn fringe of hers keeps coming and going!
Pru [ Shannen Doherty ] breaks the rules of witchcraft.
Men are turned into beasts. Gee, original metaphor. Since the manimals are still innocents, the girls can't vanquish them ...
Phoebe [ Alyssa Milano ] has strange fits, as if she is being attacked. Brian Krause [now an ex-Angel] suggests it is a message from a past life. Pheebs regresses to her past life, and finds herself a 1920s flapper. There are shades of Agatha Christie ...
The 3 sisters are cousins who live in the same house and run a speakeasy. Phoebe is evil with a warlock lover called Anton, and together they plot to kill Piper and Pru. Will Anton pop up in the present? Will true love be punished?
Phoebe's only hope is a young girl who witnessed the whole thing. The girl is now a woman in her eighties, and seems senile ...
Bane [Antonio Sabato Jr] returns. This is a follow-up to the previous ep he was in, Charmed [Season 2, Episode 9] Ms Hellfire.
Bane escapes and kidnaps Pru. He needs her to protect him from a demon, Litvak [Steve Railsback - X-Files, The Visitor ].
Pru starts to trust him. Does she have Stockholm Syndrome?
Pru has to help a woman who has terribble luck. However, a Darklighter [Arnold Vosloo - The Mummy ] is secretly cursing her with bad luck.
Pru's intervention makes her the Darklighter's target.
Piper has to split with Dan so she can be with Leo instead.
The sisters' Aunt Gail tries to steal their powers and give them to a demon played by Cameron Bancroft [ Codename Eternity ].
Phoebe discovers she will need to use reading glasses.
